TENATIVE EXAMINATION DATE: Week of October 26, 2026.
The City of Stockton is seeking to fill a vacant Electrician II position in the Public Works Department. The ideal candidate should possess knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the electrical trade. The incumbent will work a City of Stockton 9/80 schedule: 6:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Fridays, with alternating Fridays off.
Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, in a "for-cause" employmentstatus, and are represented by Operating Engineers' Local 3 Trades and Maintenance Unit (Classified/Represented).
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and a medical examination which includes a back evaluation.
Under general supervision, performs installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of electrical equipment used in street lighting, circuits, motors, controls, and electrical plant equipment, inside and field wiring, telephone systems, and related systems and equipment; operates a variety of hand and power tools; performs related work as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Electrician II is the skilled, journey level class in this series. Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of assigned duties. This class is distinguished from Senior Electrician, which is the lead level in this series.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Illustrative Only)

1. Inspects, maintains, repairs, installs and tests electrical circuits, transformers, switches, street lights, lighting fixtures, motor starters, motors, generators, outlets, control panels, electrical components of telemetering systems, cathodic protection systems, and communication networks and related electrical systems.
2. Performs troubleshooting and diagnostic work on a variety of electrical equipment.
3. Installs conduit and pulls wire for motors, control panels, lighting fixtures, outlets, and other purposes.
4. Makes cable splices of various sizes and difficulty as required.
5. Installs transmission poles, cross arms, braces, and supporting fixtures.
6. Performs phase balancing operations and may make load computations on a variety of electrical circuits.
7. Makes as-built drawings of electrical installations.
8. Directs the work of subjourney level employees; ensures that proper safety precautions are observed, with particular emphasis on work performed on energized equipment.
9. Makes rough estimates of labor, materials, and supplies required to perform specific assignments; orders supplies as needed.
10. May insect, maintain, repair, install and test diesel power generating and related co-generation equipment.
11. Operates a truck and power take-off equipment in performing assigned work.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:

Electrician I: Possession of a high school diploma or GED and two years of experience in electrical work. Successful completion of coursework in the areas of electrical mathematics, basic electricity, industrial electronics and electrical codes is desirable.

Electrician II: In addition to the above EITHER two years of experience in electrical work at a level equivalent to the City's Electrician I class OR completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the electrical trade. College or technical school coursework in electrical theory and practice is desirable.

Other Requirements:

• Must possess a valid California driver's license.
• Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
• Must be willing to work out of doors in all weather conditions.
• Must be willing to work from aerial buckets and underground in confined places and with possible exposure to potentially hazardous substances.
• Must be willing to work overtime and off-hours and shifts in emergency situations.
• Must possess good color vision.

NOTE: The level and scope of the knowledge and skills listed below are related to job duties as defined under Class Characteristics.

Knowledge of:

• Principles, techniques, tools and materials used in the electrical trade;
• Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power and ship tools, test equipment common to electrical and electronic work;
• Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work;
• Codes, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the work;
• AC/DC theory and control circuits;
• Basic electronics and micro-computer applications related to the work;
• Electrical mathematics;
• Basic electronics.

Skill in:

• Operating and maintaining a variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment used in electrical installation, maintenance and repair work;
• Understanding and following oral and written instructions;
• Properly placing cones, barricades and warning devices and directing traffic flow at job sites;
• Exercising independent judgment and initiative without close supervision;
• Reading and interpreting schematics, blueprints, plans and specifications;
• Preparing basic records of work performed;
• Estimating materials and equipment necessary to complete assigned jobs;
• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted;
• Working on high voltage electrical circuits safely.

The Examination:

Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process may include an oral or a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
