Electrical Hardware Design Engineer - Job Description

Job Title: Hardware Engineer
Department: Engineering
Reports To: Functional Team Lead / Program Manager
FLSA Status: Exempt / Full-time

Salary Range: $110,000 - $150,000 Annually (depending on experience)

ROLE

We are seeking an Electrical Hardware Design Engineer with 5 to 10 years of experience designing complex, high-reliability PCBAs for military, aerospace, or similarly demanding applications. The engineer will own hardware development from requirements and schematic design through PCB layout, bring-up, qualification, and production release.

Responsibilities include schematic design, PCB layout leadership, power distribution architecture, signal and power integrity, electrical interface integration, and EMI/EMC-conscious design. Hands-on layout experience with complex designs is preferred. Strong expertise in digital and mixed-signal design is required, along with experience in hardware bring-up, laboratory debug, verification and validation, and root-cause analysis.

The engineer will ensure hardware meets electrical, environmental, reliability, and military/aerospace qualification requirements, while providing technical leadership across multidisciplinary engineering teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead or support hardware development from requirements and architecture through schematic design, board bring-up, validation and system integration.
  • Develop and document hardware requirements, block diagrams, interface definitions, and design trade studies.
  • Perform schematic capture and guide PCB layout activities including component placement, routing strategies, and DFM/DFT considerations.
  • Support prototype production, vendor coordination, BOM creation, and resolution of fabrication or assembly issues.
  • Lead and execute board bring-up, debug, and validation testing using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power analyzers, and other lab instruments.
  • Troubleshoot hardware issues at the circuit, component, and system level and provide clear corrective actions.
  • Develop test plans, test procedures, and test reports with traceability to requirements.
  • Collaborate with firmware, systems, manufacturing, and test teams during integration, qualification, and production transition.
  • Contribute to improvements in design processes, engineering documentation, and hardware standards.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Strong proficiency with schematic capture tools such as Altium Designer, OrCAD, or Mentor.
  • Experience with high-speed digital design, mixed signal design, or power distribution design.
  • Hands-on experience with PCBA bring-up and board-level debugging.
  • Solid understanding of analog circuits, digital circuits, and power electronics fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with requirements analysis and traceability.
  • Strong lab skills using oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and related tools.
  • Proficiency with microcontroller-based systems, FPGA or CPLD interfaces, SOC hardware designs.
  • Ability to write test procedures and document results clearly.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes including PCB fabrication, SMT assembly, and design for manufacturability or test.
  • Experience with environmental or qualification testing such as MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, DO-160, or similar standards.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, SpaceWire and Ethernet.
  • Experience supporting environmental stress screening or similar production tests.
  • Experience with revision control and issue tracking systems.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years, 7-10 preferred, of relevant experience in electronic design.
  • US Person required; ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • Position located in Melbourne, FL or Greenville, SC (not remote).
