Full Job Description
What You'll Do
  • Report to the Manager for Mechanical & Electrical Engineering.
  • Provide design management for renovation projects of existing campus buildings and infrastructure. You will develop and manage project scope, schedule, and budget. Project designs may be self-performed or by a third-party consultant.
  • Provide drawing and specification documentation for power, lighting, fire alarm, and auxiliary systems for self-performed design. Layout equipment and systems, perform engineering calculations such as load, short circuit, and arc flash, and select equipment and devices with support from lead engineers or the electrical engineering manager. Write standards and technical specifications. Coordinate the design with all disciplines and other U-M partners.
  • Manage consultant activities to ensure completion of the project requirements, including the scope, schedule, and budget goals for designs by third-party consultants. Develop Request for Proposals and review payment invoices.
  • Meet and communicate with facility managers, professors, researchers, and other partners to develop project goals. Consult with the electrical engineering manager and other office leadership to determine resource allocation needs and to provide project updates. Assist and direct drafters to accomplish project tasks and supporting office priorities.
  • Perform field surveys in mechanical, electrical, and other building spaces to document existing electrical systems and to understand building interferences. You will assess conditions and performance of systems and components. Develop recommendations for alterations to buildings and infrastructure based on the findings of field surveys and evaluations.
  • Review designs with appropriate agencies to ensure compliance with codes and regulations. Administer RFIs and construction bulletins for design revisions. You will review and process shop drawings and help resolve construction issues.
  • Participate in or lead groups and initiatives, such as the development of new master details or specifications.

Skills You Have

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.

Registered as a State of Michigan Professional Engineer (PE).

Four or more years of progressively responsible experience in the design and construction of electrical systems for commercial, educational, or research type buildings, including experience in design management.

Knowledge and expertise with primary voltage systems and secondary voltage systems (
Experience with lighting and lighting control design.

Experience with fire alarm design.

Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or Revit platforms and industry-standard power and lighting calculation software.

Knowledge of the NEC, NFPA 72, ASHRAE 90.1, and other related building codes.
