Position Overview

The Novelis Bay Minette, AL team is seeking an Electrical Engineer to work on site. This role will report to the Engineering, Maintenance, Reliability & Automation (EMRA) Leader of the hiring Manufacturing Unit. The ideal candidate will be responsible for electrical engineering and contribute to the achievement of the plant’s safety, quality, sustainability and budget objectives. This position will work with other electrical engineering teammates and work to keep current with the constantly evolving technology, balancing it with the needs of the operations to bring forth improvements in automated systems and methods.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze advanced analyses and identify areas of potential advancements in the processes, equipment, and facilities to achieve increased profitability through reduced costs, increased efficiency, improved quality, increased production output and optimized equipment uptime.
  • Support the aluminum manufacturing process by working closely with the Operations, Engineering, Administrative, and Process groups.
  • Work closely with the Automation, Reliability & Engineering Managers to develop conceptual and functional requirements for short- and long-term process and equipment development (facility planning) consistent with the business plan.
  • Provide after-hours and weekend support as needed to assist maintenance in the resolution of issues having an immediate impact on plant performance. This can involve providing direction/mentorship remotely and/or onsite.
  • Support maintenance technicians and engineers to resolve and prevent maintenance and engineering problems and to develop training programs on processes and equipment for the maintenance staff.
  • Apply innovative technology and techniques to resolve complex problems related to recycle, remelt and casting electrical controls
  • Cross-train with teams on subjects pertaining to electrical controls for recycle, remelt and casting applications.
  • Review Site equipment and technology for robustness, reliability, and obsolescence. Develop plans for modifications and/or upgrades as needed.
  • Constantly search for innovations and continuous improvement.
  • Support and assist on capital projects from conceptual to implementation phases
  • Handle communication between plant electrical supply (power distribution).
  • Implement electrical engineering solutions for environmental regulations and processes and/or system improvements.
  • Interact with internal collaborators to support, mentor, and needed assistance to meet safety, quality, reliability, and cost goals.
  • Influence regional and/or global decision-making by preparing and presenting technical information to senior management on matters with significant business impact, such as regional/multi-site capital expenditures or regional process/product improvements
  • Adhere to and support company quality, environmental, health & safety, and certification standards, including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, IATF 16949:2016, and ASI Certifications, where applicable.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 3+ years of progressive experience.
  • Work experience in the field of factory electrical engineering
  • Knowledge of electric motor and drive systems
  • Experience with design and program logic for PLCs and HMIs (Allen Bradley(Rockwell) studio 5000, PowerFlex VFDs, and Factory Talk View SE/ME experience preferred).
  • Methodical equipment problem-solving skills
  • Good project management skills
  • Result oriented and decision-making capabilities
  • Strong collaboration skills; ability to support, lead and develop other personnel to accomplish personal, plant and corporate objectives
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills; ability to connect with all levels in the organization
  • Desire to take initiative and develop a pro-active relationship with employees through follow-up, understanding their needs and encouraging a collaborative relationship
  • Ability to travel up to 10% (Domestic and International)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Steel or Aluminum recycle, remelt and casting process experience.
  • Proficiency in Historian (iba/PDA systems).
  • Knowledge of large industrial combustion systems is desirable
  • Basic understanding of capabilities for controls and servo systems and an understanding of maintenance procedures and principles of equipment reliability.
  • Experience in troubleshooting mechanical systems including hydraulics, pneumatics, tooling issues, measurement feedback systems, and basic design robustness.

Location Profile

Novelis' newly announced Bay Minette facility will be located 35 miles northeast of Mobile AL and 45 miles west of Pensacola FL and is expected to create approximately 1000 high-paying advanced careers in modern manufacturing. This highly advanced rolling and recycling facility will be the first of its kind. It will primarily serve our customers in the beverage can and automotive markets.
