Electrical Controls Engineer
Location: Whiting Mill
Description:
The Electrical Controls Engineer will design, implement, and maintain control systems for paper mill operations to ensure optimal efficiency, quality and safety. This role focuses on automation, instrumentation, and process optimization across paper machine and converting operations. The successful candidate will be required to work on site at the Whiting Mill in Stevens Point, WI.
Responsibilities:
- Keep environmental and employee safety top-of-mind in the completion of all tasks.
- Configure and maintain PLCs and HMI systems for paper mill processes.
- Develop and update control logic for stock preparation, paper machines, and converting lines.
- Install, calibrate, and troubleshoot sensors, actuators, and process instruments (e.g., flow, pressure, temperature, level).
- Provide engineering support to assist in the maximization of asset TPD, Yield, Uptime, and COM targets.
- Analyze production data to improve machine efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product quality.
- Implement advanced control strategies for consistency control, basis weight, moisture, and tension.
- Provide technical support during equipment failures and process upsets.
- Collaborate with Maintenance and Operations teams to resolve control-related issues.
- Maintain accurate documentation of control systems and modifications.
- Development and execute capital projects to support strategic initiatives, reduce costs, and sustain and improve operations from a safety, reliability and environmental standpoint.
- Abide by the spirit of all identified industry safety guidelines, mandates, regulations, and laws.
- Manage third party engineering as needed to expedite project initiatives.
- Assist in the development and management of the 5-year capital plan for the Whiting facility.
- Plan and execute annual mill shutdowns so activities are impactful and remain in budget.
- Support the develop the technical skills of our Electrical and Instrumentation team members.
- Support the develop the technical skills of others in the Engineering group.
- Incorporate energy and cost effectiveness into the design of all equipment additions and modifications.

- Participate in Mill Weekend Maintenance rotation

Qualifications:
Required
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
- Proficiency in PLC/DCS programming (Rockwell\Allen-Bradley Controllogix).
- Proficiency with Rockwell\Allen-Bradley PowerFlex AC and DC drives.
- Proficiency with Rockwell\Allen-Bradley FactoryTalk View Studio and Panelview Plus hardware.
- Knowledge of industrial networking and control system cybersecurity.
- Must be able to wear required PPE when needed, and travel through the facility to perform tasks in areas that are hot and humid. This may require climbing stairs or ladders.
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Automation or Engineering field.
- Experience in pulp and paper manufacturing, to include familiarity with paper mill processes and quality control systems.
- Knowledge of AutoCad Electrical a plus.
- Preferred Certifications: ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP) or similar.
