Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or Related Field Position DescriptionThe EHS Manager owns the EHS function across Somafina's manufacturing, packaging, and laboratory operations, leading the development, implementation, and enforcement of safety protocols facility-wide. This role carries full accountability for OSHA, FDA, and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliance, directs incident and workers' compensation case management, and builds a proactive safety culture through daily facility walks, training programs, and cross-departmental leadership.
This is a management-level role responsible for setting EHS strategy and priorities, managing safety programs and any assigned staff, and serving as the primary point of accountability for safety performance to senior leadership.
Essential ResponsibilitiesSafety Compliance & Inspections- Conducts routine safety inspections of production, packaging, and laboratory areas to identify hazards and ensure GMP and OSHA compliance.
- Develops and maintains safety policies tailored to nutraceutical/manufacturing environments, including sanitation, allergen control, and chemical handling.
- Monitors air quality, exposure levels, and noise in compliance with industrial hygiene standards.
- Ensures proper storage, labeling, and handling of raw materials, supplements, and cleaning chemicals; maintains SDS records and chemical inventory.
- Leads daily Gemba/safety walks of facilities, partnering with leadership to reinforce behavioral safety culture (e.g., STOP program) and observe conditions firsthand.
Incident Management & Reporting- Leads accident and incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) plans.
- Maintains incident report and near-miss databases; ensures timely activation of CAPA plans.
- Prepares and submits required OSHA reporting, including OSHA 300 logs, and maintains all associated documentation.
- Creates and maintains weekly safety reporting for management and prepares documentation for audits, regulatory inspections (FDA, OSHA), and third-party certifications.
Workers' Compensation & Return-to-Work- Manages workers' compensation claims from filing through resolution, including direct contact with injured employees and coordination with claims adjustors.
- Develops, activates, and manages individualized return-to-work plans, adapting accommodations to employee needs.
- Ensures all return-to-work and leave processes comply with ADA, FLSA, and FMLA regulations.
- Maintains ongoing communication with workers' compensation carriers and adjustors throughout the claim lifecycle.
Training & Collaboration- Delivers and oversees training on GMP compliance, PPE usage, chemical safety, emergency response, required OSHA training, and SOP training.
- Collaborates with Quality Assurance, Production, Human Resources, and Maintenance leadership to proactively address safety concerns and align EHS priorities across departments.
Program Leadership & Team Management- Sets the strategic direction and annual priorities for Somafina's EHS program, in alignment with company leadership.
- Recruits, trains, and manages any EHS staff or coordinators, providing coaching and performance oversight.
- Owns the EHS budget, including safety equipment, training programs, and outside certifications or consultants.
- Represents Somafina's safety program to senior leadership, regulators, and third-party auditors.
- Builds and mentors a network of site safety champions across departments to extend the reach of the EHS program.
Education Requirements- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field; candidates with an environmental background are strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive EHS experience, including experience leading or managing safety programs, preferably in a nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, or food manufacturing environment.
- Prior experience managing direct reports or leading cross-functional safety initiatives is strongly preferred.
Competencies / Skill Qualifications- Strong understanding of OSHA standards, GMPs, FDA regulations, and HACCP principles.
- Working knowledge of ADA, FLSA, and FMLA as they apply to workers' compensation and return-to-work management.
- Proven ability to build, lead, and develop a team or cross-functional program, with strong people-management and coaching skills.
- Comfortable setting strategy and priorities, and translating them into day-to-day execution across departments.
- Certifications preferred: OSHA 30, ASP, CSP, CIH, or HACCP.
- Excellent communication, training, and report-writing skills, including the ability to present to senior leadership.
- Experience with safety management systems and incident tracking software is a plus.
- Highly adaptable, with the ability to navigate evolving priorities and build GMP knowledge on the job.
- English proficiency required.
Physical Requirements- Work involves both office and production floor environments.
- May require standing, walking, or wearing PPE in regulated areas for extended periods.
- Occasional travel to warehouses or contract manufacturing sites.
