Department 05346, Radar Advanced Exploitation and Human-Systems Integration, is seeking an early career data exploitation and analysis engineer to join our creative, energetic team of scientists and engineers. As a successful candidate, you will advance state-of-the-art Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensor systems in computer vision, digital signal processing, and image formation research and development to address real-world challenges. You will have the opportunity to develop entirely new methods for digital signal processing, image formation, and imagery exploitation techniques using cutting-edge imaging sensor datasets.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Develop and improve digital signal and image processing techniques that address real world national security situational awareness and decision-making challenges
  • Work alongside experienced R&D professionals to advance state-of-the-art in data analysis and exploitation
  • Work across RF disciplinary boundaries to develop novel SAR information products
  • Analyze and resolve anomalies in algorithmic performance and implementation

Candidates are expected to have education in the application of principles, theories, concepts, and practices related to RF signal processing and image formation and/or computer vision, including object detection and identification. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain collaborative, productive relationships in a diverse, interdisciplinary teaming environment.

Due to the nature of the work, this position requires an on-site presence at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM. Relocation provided for those who qualify.

Salary Range

$102,400 - $199,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance and SCI level clearance which may require a polygraph


Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D S&E Electrical Engineer candidate will in addition possess the following:
  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate well in a multidisciplinary team of designers and test engineers.
  • Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling.

Also for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in related STEM discipline, or bachelor's degree in related STEM discipline with 5 years of related experience
  • Coursework in electromagnetics
  • Coursework in machine learning applications
  • Familiarity with Unix/Linux programming environments
  • Experience programming Python, C and/or C++ programming languages
  • Experience in the use of MATLAB/Simulink and/or similar numerical computation programs
  • Ability to travel to customer locations
  • Active DOE Q-level or DOD Top Secret/SCI clearance


About Our Team

Sandia's Radar Advanced Exploitation and Human-Systems Integration Department (05346) operates within Sandia's Radar Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (Radar ISR) business area to develop and field high-performance Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems. We work across the national security community to develop the sensor products that make the most of our country's next-generation ISR technologies. Our department specializes in innovative RF data exploitation and analysis techniques, including applications in statistical signal analysis, automated target recognition, bistatic and polarimetric systems, and the design of RF sensor-based image products that demonstrably support human situational awareness in high-consequence operational settings.
