Background & General Description:

AFEDE supports the Africa East region in strengthening operational quality, portfolio performance, and development effectiveness through quality assurance, portfolio analytics, and risk-informed management. The unit supports corporate commitments, monitoring of regional contributions to global priorities, and evidence-based decision-making.

To support AFEDE in advancing risk-based portfolio management, lending, operational quality, and development effectiveness, including monitoring of AFE corporate targets and contributions to global priorities through analytics, operational support, and knowledge generation.

VPU Context:

Eastern and Southern Africa (AFE) is home to nearly 60% of the continent's population, with strong human and natural resource potential but persistent challenges in job creation, poverty, and inequality. The World Bank Group is supporting countries in the region to accelerate job creation through investments in infrastructure and human capital, stronger governance and business environments, and mobilization of private sector investment. This is complemented by regional programs in energy, transport, digital connectivity, water, and skills development that enable economic transformation. Flagship initiatives such as Mission 300, AIM2030, and Agriconnect aim to expand opportunities at scale. Unit Context:

The AFEDE team provides proactive operational services focused on strategic and advice, and guidance to staff and regional management and works closely with the Verticals and CMUs in delivering and managing pipeline and portfolio. Duties and accountabilities:

Operational Quality and Client-Focused Delivery
• Apply operational policies and procedures to support quality across portfolio, lending and ASA.
• Provide solutions-oriented advice to task teams and CMUs.
• Contribute to reviews of operational products ensuring compliance and quality.
• Support as needed the monitoring of corporate and regional targets.

Risk-Based Portfolio Monitoring, Analytics, and Corporate Reporting
• Support systematic identification and monitoring of operational risks.
• Analyze portfolio and other available data and information to identify risk drivers and performance trends.
• Maintain dashboards and risk tracking tools.
• Prepare analytical briefs for management decision-making.
• Track mitigation actions and follow up with teams.

Selection Criteria
• Education: Master's degree in relevant field.
• Experience: 7-10 years in development or World Bank operations
