Overview

E2 Consulting Engineers is seeking a qualified Dual Coating & Welding Inspector to support Nicor Gas natural gas pipeline construction projects across Illinois. This specialized dual-certified role combines expertise in both welding inspection and field-applied coating inspection to ensure the highest standards of quality, safety, and compliance on pipeline construction and integrity projects.

The Dual Coating & Welding Inspector plays a critical role in verifying welder qualifications, welding procedures, weld quality, and coating application. This position requires strong technical knowledge of welding codes (API 1104, ASME B31.8) and coating standards, along with the ability to perform comprehensive field inspections across both disciplines.

Responsibilities

Welding Inspection & Quality Assurance
  • Verify that welding procedures are properly qualified and utilized on the project.
  • Confirm that all welders are qualified for the work they are performing and that qualifications are current.
  • Monitor weld quality to ensure sound welds are produced at all joints in accordance with applicable codes and Company specifications.
  • Verify that repairs made to correct weld defects properly address the issue and meet code and specification requirements.
  • Ensure all welding materials are of the proper type and quality, stored correctly, and that damaged materials are not used.
  • Maintain detailed weld mapping, as-built documentation, and proper material traceability (MTRs).
Coating Inspection
  • Inspect field-applied coatings on pipe, fittings, valves, and joints to verify compliance with Company procedures and manufacturer instructions.
  • Perform coating inspections including holiday detection (jeeping), mil thickness verification, and hardness testing.
  • Witness all HDD pull-throughs to verify coating protection and examine the leading edge for coating damage.
  • Complete all required pre-backfill, pre-pull, and post-HDD coating verification checks.
General Pipeline Inspection & Documentation
  • Inspect Other Contractors' work for compliance with permit and one-call requirements.
  • Verify proper material usage, equipment, and safety measures on the jobsite.
  • Complete Daily Inspection Reports, coating inspection forms, safety forms, and other required documentation accurately and thoroughly.
  • Witness hydrostatic testing and verify equipment calibration documentation.
  • Maintain proactive communication with the Chief Inspector regarding daily issues, anticipated problems, and resource needs.


Qualifications

  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (AWS CWI, SCWI, or CPWI accepted).
  • NACE CIP Level 1 (or current AMPP equivalent).
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of pipeline construction and/or inspection experience (combination of welding and coating experience preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of welding techniques, procedures, consumables, and weld preparation.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, alignment sheets, and valve maps.
  • Familiarity with DOT 192 and OSHA regulations.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards: API 1104, ASME B31.8, NACE, and SSPC.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate weld mapping and documentation.

Preferred
  • Experience on urban natural gas transmission pipeline projects.
  • Additional NDT certifications (e.g., MT or PT Level 1).
  • AMPP CIP Level 2 or higher.
  • Experience with horizontal directional drilling (HDD) coating inspection.

Wage Data Per State Requirements

This role will pay $50.49 an hour depending on experience.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Construction Sites and/or Client Right-of-Way (R.O.W.)
  • Client testing facility (occasionally)
  • Corporate office (occasionally)
  • Reports to the Chief Inspector, based locally with respect to the projects.
  • May require extensive driving to reach job sites and/or client/E2 offices.
  • Frequent ascending and descending of ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms up in and out of pipeline bell-hole / trench / excavation.
  • Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.
  • Lifting objects in excess of 50 pounds from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position
  • Ability to perform visual inspection of construction crew quality of work; using measuring devices; and/or assembly of fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
  • Able to perform in both inside and outside environmental conditions in all four seasons throughout the continental United States - extreme cold (temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit) and/or extreme heat (temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit) for periods of more than one hour.
  • May require extensive driving to reach job sites and/or client/E2 offices.
