GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs highly complex (seniorlevel) systems administration work. Work involves coordinating the installation, configuration, security, and reliable operation of enterprise systems and platforms; defining and controlling access privileges; and ensuring the integrity, availability, and security of critical information systems. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Coordinate, plan, and schedule EndofLife (EOL) lift and shift migrations, ensuring legacy applications and middleware are successfully moved to modern Windows and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) platforms.

2. Install, configure, and support existing middleware components (web services, runtimes, application components) on pre provisioned operating systems.

3. Analyze and support legacy application installations, including troubleshooting dependencies and ensuring compatibility on new OS versions.

4. Perform upgrades, patching, and security remediation for supported Windows and RHEL systems, ensuring compliance with agency standards and security events.

5. Define and manage user roles, access permissions, and authentication controls to maintain secure access to applications and systems.

6. Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues involving application behavior, middleware interactions, and system integrations.

7. Document installation steps, configuration details, migration procedures, and system requirements with accuracy.

8. Maintain software inventory and lifecycle tracking, including EOL schedules, upgrade planning, and system status documentation.

9. Coordinate with QA teams to test migrated or upgraded applications, validate functionality, and resolve defects.

10. Collaborate with security, networking, development, and operations teams to support system transitions, maintain performance, and ensure smooth deployment.

11. Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.

12. Perform other duties as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:

Education ¿ High School Diploma/equivalent is required. Graduation from an accredited fouryear college or university with a major in a technology related field is preferred.

Experience ¿ Minimum of four (4) years of experience performing systems administration work in an enterprise IT environment required. Experience supporting Windows Server and RHEL systems across both legacy and modern versions preferred. Experience performing EndofLife (EOL) system migrations, liftandshift transitions, platform upgrades, or similar modernization activities preferred. Experience installing, configuring, and supporting existing middleware components on provisioned operating systems is preferred. Experience working with legacy software, including analyzing installation requirements and resolving compatibility issues on new platforms is preferred.

Licensure and/or Certification ¿ If driving is required, must possess a valid driver's license from the state of residence.

Critical Organizational Infrastructure requirements ¿ This job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure; must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role. Additionally, and more specifically, must not be employed by nor have any connection or continuous connections to any governmental entity or political apparatus of a country listed in 15 C.F.R. §791.4.

Regulatory knowledge ¿ Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures.

Technology ¿ Proficiency with Microsoft Office and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems (e.g. CAPPS, SharePoint) and be able to learn new software/systems.
  • Working knowledge of Windows Server and RHEL operating systems, including both legacy and current versions used for agency applications.
  • Skill in installing, configuring, and supporting existing middleware components, including Apache HTTP Server, Tomcat, IIS, Java based runtimes, and related.
  • Understanding of legacy application installation requirements, software dependencies, configuration files, logs, and compatibility considerations across OS and application compatibility.
  • Experience using Atlassian tools, documentation, collaboration, and workflow management. Skill in maintaining accurate technical documentation.

Schedule and Travel ¿ Availability for afterhours, emergencies, and weekend work is required. This position may have the ability to telecommute based on the needs of the division/agency. Travel in city up to 1 or less times a week.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase of no more than 3.4% over their current salary regardless of posted salary.

Salary is contingent upon qualifications and is subject to salary administration and budgetary restrictions.
