DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department within the UC San Diego School of Medicine (SOM) and is responsible for fulfilling its teaching, research, and clinical missions. DOM employs approximately 500 salaried faculty, nearly 200 academic appointees, and more than 300 residents, fellows, and postdocs, supported by almost 1,000 staff members.

This position serves as a member of Medicine Leadership team. Under general direction of the Division Chiefs, and with administrative direction from the Departmental Administrative Vice Chair, the Division Administrator (DA) is responsible management of all aspects of financial and operational activities of the assigned units, including the management of the divisional programs, centers, fellowship programs, recruitment of faculty in both clinical and research arenas, negotiation and implementation of faculty salaries (under the purview and direction of the of the Divisions Chiefs) and the development, management and projections associated with complex academic, research and clinical compensation plans. The DA is also responsible for development of operational reporting structure, growth and development of staff regardless of reporting relationship, achieving goals and objectives through initiative and management leadership, collaborative skill with, faculty, medical center, medical group, School of Medicine and other campus resources.

The DA is responsible for all aspects of the divisional program development, contract negotiations, implementation and administration of all operating activities. Will negotiate resources for program development, provide overall fiscal/budgetary management, project management, special contracting and outreach activities, including referral and program development. Identifies and facilitates equipment and space solutions in partnership with the various school and departmental entities. The candidate is expected to develop strong professional and collaborative relationships and efforts at all levels.

Using consensus building management style, will collaborate on the management of divisional goals, working with division chiefs, clinical service chiefs, department leadership and medical center leaders. The DA will work with the Division of Geriatrics and other Academic Divisions as assigned by the Administrative Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine. The DA will work directly with over faculty members and staff employees. The position will be responsible for the financial management of a portfolio over $60 million in academic, clinical and research revenue per year.

Provides supervision and guidance to research staff. Oversees program administration, program development, and research activities. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Recommends changes to department policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly. Provides priority setting and work flow analysis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Doctorate in related area OR equivalent experience/education/training.
  • Five or more years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff and students in an academic or research setting.
  • Academic background and experience in relevant area of research. Relevant areas include clinical and research.
  • Ability to build relationships, collaborate and problem solve both internally and with external organizations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of program development as well as grant proposal development and administration.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including effective communication, negotiation, coaching, and conflict resolution.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of human resources management practices and policies.
  • Knowledge of financial principles and budget practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge university, state, and federal policies that influence higher education.
  • Advanced demonstrated skills in decision support and business development in clinical and/or academic setting.

  • Advanced managerial or leadership experience.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $108,100 - $204,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $51.77 - $98.13
