Position OverviewThe Technical Supervisor, Distribution Engineering, acts as a focused extension of the Department Manager for an assigned subset of the distribution engineering department. The role provides day-to-day leadership for the technical excellence, quality, consistency, and professional engineering accountability of the team, while also supporting workload oversight, staff development, performance engagement, and administrative coordination for the sub-discipline. This position helps ensure team members have the technical direction, coaching, resources, and accountability needed to deliver work safely, accurately, and in alignment with client, regulatory, and company expectations.
The role works in partnership with the Client Supervisor position as part of a purposeful leadership structure supporting the Department Manager. While this position is primarily focused on technical leadership, people support, capability development, and engineering quality within the team, it also provides practical support to project execution, client-related technical matters, continuous improvement, and safe delivery practices across the department.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership, guidance, and quality oversight for distribution engineering projects.
- Review and approve engineering work while ensuring compliance with applicable engineering standards and practices.
- Support project delivery by monitoring quality, schedules, workload, and client expectations.
- Identify technical risks, resource needs, and project challenges, and help develop effective solutions.
- Drive continuous improvement of engineering processes, design standards, tools, and best practices.
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure safety considerations are integrated into all engineering activities.
- Coordinate team resources and workload to meet project demands and support business objectives.
- Coach, mentor, and develop engineering staff through ongoing feedback, training, and career development.
- Support recruiting, onboarding, performance management, and employee engagement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and administrative requirements.
- Assist with project planning, proposals, estimates, and technical project execution activities.
- Collaborate with clients, project teams, and internal stakeholders to support successful project outcomes and strong customer relationships.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license in Civil and/or Structural Engineering required.
- 8+ years of experience in utility distribution engineering, including design, project execution, and technical leadership responsibilities.
- Previous experience in a Distribution Engineering Supervisor, Team Lead, or similar leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of distribution engineering design practices, industry standards, permitting requirements, and quality control processes.
- Demonstrated ability to serve as Engineer of Record and exercise sound engineering judgment and accountability.
- Proven experience leading engineering teams, managing workloads, and supporting successful project delivery.
- Strong communication, coaching, mentoring, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to balance technical execution, project priorities, staff development, and operational objectives in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
