Distinguished Technologist & Director, AI Strategy and Enablement (OCTO & HPE Labs)
This role has been designed as 'Hybrid' with an expectation that you will work on average 2 days per week from an HPE office.
Job Description:The OpportunityAs a senior technical leader, you will shape innovation and long-term technical direction for AI across OCTO and HPE Labs, aligning enablement work with HPE's business units and functions needs.
You will drive research-to-production delivery, translating Labs innovations and proof of concepts into robust, secure, and maintainable capabilities for engineering and field teams. Your charter includes establishing standards and reference architectures while helping HPE's business unit partners realize measurable outcomes from AI investments.
Key Responsibilities- Define and drive the enterprise AI enablement strategy and roadmap for OCTO and HPE Labs, aligned to HPE business priorities.
- Act as a hands on Distinguished Technologist: set architecture, patterns, and best practices for AI/ML systems; contribute to prototypes and complex implementations; and validate designs for scale, resilience, and security.
- Lead research transition: collaborate with HPE Labs to mature innovations into production-ready components and repeatable delivery patterns.
- Establish and enforce governance: model validation and evaluation standards, ethical/ responsible AI guardrails, data privacy/compliance, and risk management practices across AI initiatives.
- Build, mentor, and grow a high performing team of applied AI engineers and data scientists; nurture technical leadership and cross functional collaboration.
- Partner broadly across product, engineering, security, legal, data engineering, and field teams to operationalize AI use cases and maximize reuse across HPE.
- Measure and communicate impact: define KPIs for adoption, ROI, model performance, reliability, and operational cost; report progress to OCTO, HPE Labs and senior leadership.
- Represent HPE externally: engage customers, partners and the technical community to evangelize HPE's AI enablement approach and gather field feedback that shapes the roadmap.
Required Qualifications and Experience- 15+ years of relevant industry experience spanning AI/ML, software engineering, cloud/hybrid infrastructure, and enterprise product delivery; substantial experience at strategic/technical leadership levels.
- Advanced degree (MS/PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Deep expertise in modern AI: large language models, generative AI, deep learning, applied machine learning, and production model lifecycle management.
- Proven track record architecting and delivering mission critical, distributed AI applications and platforms at enterprise scale.
- Strong background in MLOps, data pipelines, data engineering, model governance, security-by-design, and cloud/hybrid deployment models (OpenStack, AWS, Azure, VMware, GreenLake).
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross functional, globally distributed teams and to influence senior stakeholders and executives.
- Excellent systems design, problem solving, and architectural judgment; familiarity with domain driven, component based and evolutionary architecture approaches.
Preferred Skills and Attributes- Recognized technical authority with a history of innovation, publications, patents or significant open-source contributions.
- Hands-on experience scripting and defining complex topologies and deployment automation across hybrid/cloud platforms.
- Strong communicator and collaborator: able to translate technical tradeoffs into business implications and align diverse teams toward common goals.

Management Level DefinitionThis role has broad technical impact across business units and is viewed internally and externally as a technical authority. You will champion large initiatives that enable HPE's long term goals, mentor other technical leaders, and drive adoption of emerging technologies and best practices across the company.
This position requires a rare combination of visionary strategy, deep technical mastery, and practical delivery experience to operationalize AI at scale across HPE. You will be the principal architect and lead of AI enablement for OCTO and HPE Labs, ensuring AI initiatives deliver secure, scalable, and measurable business value.

The expected salary/wage range for this position is provided below. Actual offer may vary from this range based upon geographic location, work experience, education/training, and/or skill level.
- United States of America: Annual Salary USD 179,500 - 358,500 in Colorado // 194,000 - 412,500 in California // 170,000 - 412,500 in Texas
The listed salary range reflects base salary. Variable incentives may also be offered.
