Position OverviewAs Discipline Lead - Civil & Structural, you will lead the civil and structural engineering scope for large-scale onshore power plant EPC projects, from feasibility studies to detailed design and construction support.
The ideal candidate brings 10+ years of experience in onshore natural-gas-based power generation and BESS, gained within engineering organizations, EPC/EPCI contractors, project developers, or utility organizations. You will have led civil/structural engineering for complex power/microgrid projects and possess strong experience across Pre-FEED, FEED, and EPC(I) phases, including bid-phase technical definition. Preferred Project experience includes simple-cycle/combined-cycle plants with gas turbines, gas engines, HRSGs, steam turbines, and Balance-of-Plant systems.
This role provides end-to-end discipline leadership from FEED through EPC execution phase, including developing and reviewing engineering deliverables, such as site grading and drainage plans, earthworks and roads, site plot plans and general arrangements, site plot plans, foundation designs, underground utilities, steel structures (pipes racks, platforms, buildings), reinforced concrete works, retaining walls, electrical duct banks, paving, and stormwater management systems, ensuring compliance with international codes (e.g., ACI, AISC, ASCE) and client specifications.
The role requires coordination with multidisciplinary teams - mechanical, electrical, Instrumentation & Controls and project management - to integrate civil and structural designs seamlessly into the overall plant layout.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee geotechnical investigations, site grading, drainage systems, and earthworks
- and earthworks design, including interpretation of geotechnical reports, establishment of design parameters, and coordination with foundations and underground layouts.
- Manage and review subcontracted or internally performed civil/structural design work, ensuring quality, schedule, and budget adherence.
- Provide technical guidance during construction, including resolving field engineering issues, reviewing contractor submittals and shop drawings, conducting site inspections, and supporting construction sequencing and constructability resolution.
- Champion safety in design by incorporating constructability reviews and risk assessments into every stage of the project.
- Provide technical leadership for complex design issues involving decisions impacting project schedule and cost issues.
- Lead and support value engineering efforts related to underground foundations, structures, drainage, embedment as well as any existing buried structures/piping that may interfere with new work.
- Serve as the primary technical interface with EPC contractors, OEMs, system integrators, building contractors, civil work subcontractors, and clients.
- Ensure compliance with applicable safety, regulatory, and industry requirements (OSHA, EPA).
- Enforce QA/QC and Management of Change (MOC) processes, maintaining accurate and auditable project documentation.
- Review specifications and client requirements for contractual alignment and prepare formal technical responses to RFIs, comments, and deviations.
- Conduct technical evaluations and feasibility studies to assess project risk.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and designers, ensuring consistent quality of deliverables.
- Oversee and support civil/structural installation activities to meet schedule, cost, quality, and safety objectives.
- Maintain and govern discipline documentation, including site work records, standards, specifications, and as-built records.
- Stay current with emerging technologies, standards, and best practices in civil and structural. Act as the civil/structural code authority, ensuring application and interpretation of applicable codes and standards (ACI, AISC, ASCE, IBC, local AHJ requirements), and supporting engineering judgment on code compliance matters.
- Support civil and structural scope definition, man-hour estimating, and execution planning during FEED and bid phases, ensuring alignment between design assumptions, construction methodology, and cost basis.
- Represent Hanwha Ocean in technical discussions with clients, JV partners, and regulatory bodies, supporting design clarity, risk mitigation, and issue resolution.
- Experience supporting procurement activities for Civil & Structural systems, including preparation and technical review of RFQs, bid evaluations, and vendor selection for Civil & Structural related packages.
- Knowledge of project procurement workflows and coordination with engineering, construction, and commissioning teams to support schedule-driven purchasing activities.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master's preferred).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in U.S. is required.
- 10+ years of experience in civil and structural engineering for large industrial or power generation projects, preferably within EPC environments.
- Proven track record in reinforced concrete and steel structure design for heavy industrial facilities.
- Strong knowledge of relevant design codes and standards (ACI, AISC, ASCE, Eurocodes, API, etc.).
- Proficiency in engineering software such as STAAD.Pro, Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
