Role Mandate

The Director, Wealth Data Governance is accountable for leading the Wealth Management Data Governance function and defining and executing a strategy aligned to Wealth CDAO priorities and the Enterprise Risk Framework. Accountable for the overall Wealth data risk posture and governance maturity, the role operates within a federated Data Owner operating model, thus requiring an understanding of data stewardship vs accountability across the Wealth lines of business. The Director ensures a risk-based, proportionate approach to data governance, data usage, and data risk management, especially when applied to analytics output, and positions data as a strategic asset through robust governance, data quality, and risk practices that support business objectives, regulatory compliance, and customer outcomes.

Key Accountabilities

Strategy & Business Alignment

  • Define and execute the Wealth Data Governance strategy aligned with Enterprise objectives and regulatory expectations
  • Align governance priorities to Wealth CDAO strategy and business goals
  • Lead the evolution of governance scope to incorporate emerging data risk domains (e.g., analytics, data usage, data management for AI )

Risk & Control Management

  • Own and oversee data risk management practices in alignment with the Enterprise Risk Framework and ONFRMF requirements
  • Establish and maintain a robust control environment governing data risk and appropriate data usage, taking a risk-based and proportionate approach

Deliver aggregated data risk reporting to support senior management and risk committee oversight

Governance Framework & Operating Model

  • Establish and maintain Wealth-specific data governance frameworks, standards, and processes
  • Ensure alignment with Enterprise data policies and consistent adoption across Wealth businesses (Private Wealth Canada, Insurance, InvestorLine, Asset Management, Burgundy, Data Foundation)
  • Drive integration of governance practices into business processes and decision-making

Data Quality & Assurance

  • Define and oversee data quality management and control practices to ensure data is fit for purpose across critical use cases
  • Establish control frameworks that provide assurance over data accuracy, integrity, and lineage
  • Ensure data supports accurate financial and regulatory reporting, sound decision-making, and positive customer outcomes

Stakeholder Management & Influence

  • Partner with senior business and functional leaders to embed data management practices across Wealth
  • Act as a trusted advisor on data governance, risk, and regulatory matters
  • Drive alignment across federated data owners and stakeholders

People Leadership

  • Build and lead a high-performing, accountable team
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation (including using AI), and strong risk discipline
  • Develop team capabilities (technical and soft skills) to support evolving governance and data risk requirements

Success Measures

  • Improved data risk posture and control effectiveness
  • Strong audit and regulatory outcomes with timely remediation
  • Measurable improvement in data quality (accuracy, completeness, timeliness)

Qualifications

Experience

  • 10+ years’ experience in financial services, data governance, data management, or risk management
  • Demonstrated experience implementing enterprise data governance and data risk frameworks
  • Post secondary education or equivalent experience.

Salary:

$121,600.00 - $211,800.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
