We are currently seeking a Director, State Income Tax to join our team in Plano, Texas (US-TX), United States (US).
Position SummaryThe Director, State Income Tax is responsible for developing and maintaining an effective state and local income tax strategy that aligns with the Company's short-term and long-term business objectives while ensuring full compliance with all applicable U.S. state and local tax regulations.
This role will lead all aspects of state income tax compliance, tax provision, audit management, forecasting, and planning activities across multiple legal entities and jurisdictions. The Director will initially support Finance integration initiatives and will ultimately become part of the Corporate Tax organization. Success in this role requires strong technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and the ability to build effective relationships with senior management, finance teams, and business partners across a global organization.
Location: Preference to have someone in or near Plano, TX. This will be a hybrid role requiring a couple of days in the office.
Key ResponsibilitiesState Income Tax Compliance- Lead all U.S. state and local income tax compliance activities, including returns, estimated payments, extensions, and related filings across multiple legal entities and jurisdictions.
- Ensure all compliance obligations are completed accurately, timely, and in accordance with applicable tax laws and regulations.
- Oversee relationships with external tax advisors and service providers, as necessary.
Tax Provision and Reporting- Prepare and review the state income tax provision in accordance with ASC 740.
- Support quarterly and annual financial reporting requirements related to state income taxes.
- Ensure appropriate documentation, controls, and processes are maintained to support financial reporting compliance.
Tax Planning and Advisory- Research and analyze complex state tax technical issues and emerging legislation.
- Identify and implement state tax planning opportunities that optimize the Company's effective tax rate and cash tax position.
- Advise management on the state tax implications of business initiatives, restructurings, acquisitions, integrations, and other strategic transactions.
Audit and Controversy Management- Lead state income tax audits, examinations, appeals, and controversy matters.
- Develop and execute audit defense strategies while managing relationships with state taxing authorities.
- Minimize tax risks and exposures through proactive issue identification and resolution.
Forecasting and Cash Tax Management- Develop and manage state tax cash flow forecasts and effective tax rate projections.
- Monitor actual tax results against forecasts and explain key variances to management.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning processes.
Policy, Process Improvement, and Leadership- Maintain and update state income tax policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to tax and finance personnel.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and assess potential impacts on the organization.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance tax processes, efficiencies, and compliance.
Qualifications Required- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 10+ years of progressive corporate tax experience with significant emphasis on U.S. state income taxation.
- Extensive knowledge of state and local income tax compliance, provision, planning, and audit management.
- Strong understanding of ASC 740 and tax accounting principles.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present complex tax matters to non-tax stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders across all organizational levels.
Preferred- Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
- Master's Degree in Taxation (MST) or LL.M. in Taxation.
- Experience within a large multinational corporation.
- Combination of public accounting and industry experience.
