Crum & Forster is seeking an experienced underwriting leader to lead the Standard Accounts Sharing Economy Business Unit. This team focuses on auto liability-driven risks in the gig economy and autonomous vehicle space, including platform-based mobility and delivery businesses, as well as companies involved in the manufacture, ownership, maintenance, testing, or operation of autonomous vehicles.
This role leads a small team of underwriters and is responsible for underwriting oversight, team development, and portfolio management in a fast-changing and specialized market. The business unit handles accounts with retentions up to $100,000 and works with both retail and wholesale brokers.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical underwriting experience, particularly in complex casualty business, and will be comfortable working with manuscript forms, customized policy language, and risks that do not fit traditional underwriting models.
What You Will Do
- Lead underwriting activity for the Standard Accounts Sharing Economy business unit
- Manage and develop a team of underwriters
- Underwrite and oversee complex auto liability-focused risks, along with related general liability and excess liability exposures
- Review new and renewal business, including pricing, structure, terms, conditions, and retentions
- Serve as a referral point for complex coverage, pricing, and underwriting decisions
- Read, analyze, and help develop manuscript forms and customized policy language
- Develop underwriting strategy to drive profitable growth
- Work with both retail and wholesale brokers on new and renewal opportunities
- Partner regularly with internal teams including claims, legal, actuarial, and product
- Help create consistency and clarity in an area where coverage and pricing are often nuanced and evolving
What you will bring to C&F:
- 10+ years of underwriting experience, preferably in commercial casualty, commercial auto, or specialty lines
- Strong experience with complex liability risks and non-standard exposures
- Strong technical coverage skills, including experience with manuscript forms and bespoke policy wording
- Experience managing or mentoring underwriters
- Ability to work effectively in an environment with ambiguity and evolving risk issues
- Strong communication, judgment, and decision-making skills
- Experience with Transportation Network Company, Delivery Network Company, and Autonomous Vehicle risks is preferred but not required
- Strong underwriting and coverage analysis skills
- Ability to interpret and construct manuscript policy language
- Strong people leadership and coaching skills
- Sound judgment in complex and evolving situations
- Ability to balance growth, risk selection, and profitability
- Effective broker relationship management across retail and wholesale channels
