The Role

Fidelity Charitableis adding a Director, Software Engineering to our Durham regional campus. Asa Director, Engineeringyou'll be responsible fordefining and executing thetechnicalstrategy for one or moreapplications aligned withyourcapability area. You'll partner closely with productmanagers,architects,ITproject managers,systemsanalysts,andother enabling functionsto translate strategicbusinessobjectivesinto scalable, secure, and resilient technology solutions.

In this role, you'll own theendtoend delivery, technical health, and operational stabilityof yourapplications and productswhileyou alsoleada delivery teamof software engineers, systems analysts, andqualitytesters. You'll balanceproductlevelpriorities with enterprise goals, ensure adherence to standards and best practices, and foster a culture of engineering excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Our technology solutions support the philanthropic community, including donors, financial advisors, and operations professionals, who work together to drive charitable giving through grants to nonprofit organizations.

  • Define and communicate a clear engineering strategy and execution roadmap aligned with business goals, product vision, and enterprise technology direction

  • Own deliverytargets, ensuring focus on business outcomes, customer experience, andlongtermplatform sustainability

  • Translate business, regulatory, and operational requirements into technical milestonesand delivery plans

  • Apply enterprise thinking to balanceneartermproduct needs with reuse, scalability, and standardization across the ecosystem

  • Provide technical leadership acrossa cross-functional delivery team, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and operationally sound

  • Maintain strong technical credibility with experience across web services and APIs, database systems, modernweb architectures, and distributed systems

  • Partner with architecture and engineering peers to ensure technical quality, maintainability, and architectural integrity

  • Ensureontime,highqualityreleases, whilemaintainingplatform stability during production support, peak periods, and market events

  • Lead engineering inputrelatedto estimation, dependency mapping, sequencing, and capacity planning

  • Partner with product and program/project Management to ensuredeliveryhealth, progress transparency, and stakeholder communication

  • Champion continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) practices to improve quality, speed, and reliability

  • Supportproductionincident and outage management, including triage, recovery, root cause analysis, and preventive remediation

  • Accountable forengineering talent lifecycle: hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and career development

  • Build, mentor, and scalehighperformingengineering leadership teamsthat embrace innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement

  • Drive adoption of modern engineering practices, tools, and ways of working, leading teams through change effectively

The Expertise and Skills You Bring

  • Proven software engineering leadership experience

  • Experience directly managing engineers responsible for full lifecycle delivery, including design, development, testing, deployment, and production support

  • Experience leading distributed teams, improving team maturity, and enabling teams to think strategically and not simply execute requests

  • Clear and confident communication skills to explain complex technical topics to a wide range of stakeholders

  • Ability to influence decisions without direct authority, make sound judgment calls and drive alignment across a complex ecosystem

  • Comfort operating across the full software development lifecycle, from early requirements through post-release support and incident management

  • Strong conceptual understanding ofobjectorienteddesign and engineering design patterns

  • Handsonexperience designing and delivering RESTful APIs and distributed services

  • Experience with relational and NoSQL databases

  • Solid understanding of SDLC best practices, governance, and quality controls

  • Passion for continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD)

Fidelitys Charitable Technology group develops the next-generation technologies that directly impacts how customers accomplish their philanthropic goals. As a member of the Fidelity Investments business unit supporting Fidelity Charitable and other philanthropic solutions for customers, companies, and financial advisors, you will help our applications evolve through hands-on software development, technical mentoring, and cross-team collaboration with a diverse, co-located engineering team, while also visualizing customer issues as drivers for internal change.

Fidelitys Onsite Working Model
Fidelity is transitioning to a full-time onsite working model through a phased rollout across regions and roles. Currently, some roles and locations require 100% onsite presence, while others require less. Onsite expectations are likely to evolve as the rollout continues. This transition does not apply to fully remote roles.
