Director, Segment Communications

We seek a seasoned, agile, and forward-thinking communications professional to elevate our segment / commercial communications. As the single point of contact for segment leaders, you will develop and deliver a coherent and compelling strategy across internal and external communications. You will articulate segment achievements and business strategies, enhancing our brand's market standing and colleague engagement across new and existing channels and audiences.

In this strategic role, you must collaborate effectively with strategy, marketing, product, engineering, and HR teams to drive unified, impactful messaging. As a single point of contact for communications with segment leaders, your advanced relationship management skills will build trust and commitment from stakeholders.

Regular media engagements are integral to this high-visibility role. You will manage relationships with business and technology journalists, including Reuters, and leverage an established network of media contacts in the technology sector to make an immediate impact

The ideal candidate will navigate complex challenges and articulate clear, engaging solutions. Experience in commercial, executive, or business segment communications within the technology sector is essential, with a preference for familiarity with publicly listed companies.

Experience working technology company within a highly matrixed environment, and closely with senior executives is crucial.

About the Role
In this opportunity as Director, Segment Communications, you will:
  • Acting as single point of contact you will lead our internal and external communications strategy for our Legal Professionals business segment.
  • As a strategic part of the segment leadership team, you will engage directly with the segment president on major business moments, announcements and thought leadership opportunities.
  • Function as a trusted advisor to senior executives, offering high-level strategic counsel on all matters related to communications including messaging, cadence and media handling
  • For external communications (50% of role), develop and execute a communications strategy and best practices including organizing speaking opportunities, developing a dedicated and bespoke media engagement strategy, social media strategy, developing messaging and speaker notes, and proactively securing strategic media coverage.
  • This role attracts two direct reports, Manager, Media Relations and Manager Influencer relations - both dedicated to the legal tech space.
  • For internal communications (50% of role), develop a communications strategy and processes for communicating both to segment colleagues and out to the enterprise. Support for this will be provided by dotted line / matrix model from an internal communications partner.
  • Deliver a program of market leading customer storytelling opportunities sharing customer impact stories, testimonials and wins across our internal and external channels for all audiences.
  • Partner with various teams to understand product moments (major and minor) and weave these stories into segment narratives to support the commercial success of the business.
  • Keep a finger on the pulse of industry trends, competitor moves, and regulatory shifts to offer timely advice and adjustments to the segment communications strategy.
  • Support the segment and communications team in crisis communications, being part of a roster of cover (including out of hours) that includes incidents that hold reputational risk for the business.


About You
You're a fit for the role of Director, Segment Communications if you have:
  • Experience working technology company within a highly matrixed environment.
  • Proven experience (8+ years) in commercial and executive communication or corporate communications within a matrixed environment for a publicly traded global and/or technology company.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to distill complex financial information into clear and compelling messages for various audiences.
  • Deep knowledge of and excellent relationships with top-tier media contacts, skilled media relations capabilities with the ability to lead media outreach programs at a senior executive level.
  • Good experience of internal comms strategy and planning.
  • Experience of developing and maintaining proactive relationships at a C-suite level colleagues.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to collaborate and build consensus effectively across functions and with senior executives.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple, competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Please note: This role is hybrid and requires you to work from one of our offices for a minimum of 3 days a week, with a requirement for some business travel.

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations.For Ontario, Canada, the base compensation range for this role is $155,000 CAD - $205,000 CAD.Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance.
