Full Job Description
The Position

We are seeking a Director, FP&A to serve as a strategic finance partner to our R&D organization. In this highly visible role, you will support critical investment decisions across our development portfolio by delivering financial insights, forecasting, and decision support.

You'll work closely with R&D and finance leadership to translate scientific and clinical strategies into actionable financial plans, helping ensure resources are deployed effectively across programs.

This role reports to the Sr. Director of FP&A and follows a hybrid scheduled of two-to-three days per week in office.

The Impact You'll Have

Strategic Partnership & Decision Support
  • Partner with R&D leadership and project teams to develop portfolio and program-level financial plans
  • Lead scenario modeling, cost-benefit analyses, and vendor investment decisions
  • Support clinical program investment decisions and other high-priority strategic initiatives

Financial Planning & Analysis
  • Deliver accurate and timely forecasts, budgets, and long-range plans for R&D functions
  • Prepare and present financial analyses to senior leadership, including materials for Board meetings
  • Provide variance analysis and actionable insights to inform decision-making

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner closely with Accounting to align budget vs actuals, including accruals, coding, and variance reporting
  • Collaborate with functional stakeholders to translate scientific and operational plans into financial outcomes

Process Improvement & Systems
  • Drive improvements in FP&A processes, reporting, and forecasting accuracy
  • Partner with the Head of FP&A to enhance and automate allocation methodologies across programs and indications

What We're Looking For

Experience & Background
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field; MBA or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry, including significant FP&A experience
  • Experience supporting R&D or development organizations strongly preferred
  • Clinical trial forecasting and accruals experience preferred

Technical & Analytical Skills
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience with financial systems such as NetSuite, Coupa, and Anaplan, or similar tools
  • Strong financial modeling and forecasting capabilities, including ad hoc analysis

This role follows a hybrid schedule, with an expectation to be onsite at our South San Francisco headquarters two-to-three days per week.

The expected annual salary range for employees located in the San Francisco Bay Area is $227,000 to $277,000. Additionally, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus.

Maze performs position-based compensation benchmarking to industry market data to ensure we pay competitive wages. Determination of starting salary will depend upon a variety of job-related factors, which may include professional experience, skills, and job location. The expected salary range for this role may be modified in the future.
