Full Job Description
Summary: The Director Plant Utilities & Sustainability is responsible for leading the plant engineering, utilities operations, and utilities maintenance teams supporting the 24/7 manufacturing operations on the Devens Campus. The Director Plant Utilities & Sustainability also owns the implementation of the Devens Campus Sustainability initiatives.This role is overall responsible and accountable for ensuring that site plant and critical utilities and related systems are operated and maintained in accordance with all safety and compliance requirements while ensuring optimal equipment/system reliability and uptime. The Director Plant Utilities & Sustainability provides leadership and strategic direction to the teams supporting the Devens Site Manufacturing Operations. This leadership role is expected to Champion Safety and Compliance and set the example and standard for personal ownership and accountability for both safety and compliance. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESONSI-BILITIES
  • Lead Plant Utilities & Sustainability (Central Utilities Operations, Building Utilities, Clean Utilities, Plant Engineering and Sustainability) in support of the Devens Campus operations Manufacturing Operations.
  • Champions safety and compliance as a leader within the Site Engineering Department. Holds self and team personally accountable for safety and compliance.
  • Manages a budget of about $8-12MM in Utilities operations, with service contracts in the amount of $5-6MM.
  • Champion Safety by partnering with site and corporate EHS to develop and implement processes, procedures, and strategies to ensure that we are creating an environment and culture to keep our employees safe.
  • Provide technical and strategic leadership to the Plant Engineering, Utilities Operations, and Utilities Maintenance teams.
  • Utilities Maintenance include the daily activities as well as regularly scheduled activities such as preventative maintenance and area shutdown activities to limit manufacturing disruption, maintenance planning & scheduling, reliability centered maintenance (RCM), MRO and all mechanical, electrical and instrumentation services.
  • Collaborates with peers in Asset Management, Life Cycle Engineering, Manufacturing, and Site Engineering to ensure all utilities equipment and systems are operated and maintained to deliver optimal reliability and uptime.
  • Provides coaching and mentoring to team members, supporting performance and development.
  • Develop and implement engineering and maintenance programs designed to continuously improve utilities operations. e.g., condition-based monitoring, machine learning, predictive maintenance
  • Set short- and long-term strategies for the team that aligns with Site Engineering and Devens Campus objectives. Communicate a clear vision for the team aligned with the Devens Site and overall business objectives.
  • Develop and manage the teams through hiring, talent development, coaching, and performance management in a manner that creates an inclusive and supportive work environment.
  • Develop and implement systems and processes that minimize inconsistencies or defects in equipment that could lead to variability in equipment/system output.
  • Develop, implement, and track best in class maintenance, engineering, and reliability KPI’s and ensure the appropriate review process is in place so actions are being taken to address performance issues.
  • In collaboration with the Reliability Engineering organization, define and implement strategies to ensure that equipment is operating reliably and per design specifications.
  • Implement and maintain inspection readiness programs to ensure that the manufacturing equipment, systems, and facilities are always inspection-ready and maintained to the highest standards.
  • Maintain a collaborative and positive working relationship with our Integrated Facilities Management service provider to deliver best in class facilities support services.
  • Build and sustain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders including Manufacturing, Quality, EHS, and local community and regulatory agencies to meet site and Business requirements.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL
  • Expert level knowledge of maintenance, metrology, utility operations, and facilities within a regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Experience managing the operations and maintenance of critical utilities supporting a large manufacturing campus.
  • Experience with the commissioning and qualification of facility and utility equipment and systems.
  • Experience with Quality Management Systems, specifically Change Control.
  • Expert level understanding OSHA and general Life Safety Requirements for industrial utilities operations.
  • Experience interacting with regulatory agencies and local government officials.
  • Extensive people management experience. Coaching, developing, and managing a staff of professional employees as well as contractors.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Must be able to present complex technical information to peers and leadership to influence decisions.
  • Experience managing contractors and contracted service s for a large campus.
  • Experience developing and maintaining engineering, utilities, maintenance, and site services programs for a large campus.
  • Specific knowledge of equipment reliability principles and processes as related to maintenance best practices.
  • Knowledge and experience in supporting upstream cell culture and downstream purification processes.
  • Knowledge and experience in the maintenance and operation of clean utilities such as water for injection, pure steam, clean room HVAC systems, and Building Management Systems within a GMP manufacturing facility.
  • Working knowledge and experience with regulatory inspections.
  • Fundamental understanding of the maintenance principles and requirements for electrical, HVAC, process heating and cooling utilities.
  • Experience leading a large team of multi-skilled trades within a regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Experience managing OPEX and/or CAPEX budgets >10M.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience leading an Engineering and/or Facilities Team responsible for the critical utilities and systems supporting pharmaceutical or biotech manufacturing operations.
  • Minimum 10 years pharmaceutical industry experience with expertise in Metrology, Maintenance, and/or Reliability Engineering systems, activities, and operations.
  • Minimum 10 years pharmaceutical industry experience related to Engineering and or Maintenance activities and operations.
