Overall Purpose

The Director of People and Decision Science leads the application of economics, statistics, data science, and experimentation to complex workforce decisions. This leader will build and manage a small team of data scientists while serving as the organization’s senior technical expert in workforce decision science.

The role goes beyond identifying correlations and trends to address more complex questions, such as:

  • What is the causal impact of manager quality on productivity, engagement, and attrition?

  • Which skills are becoming more valuable?

  • How can we determine whether leadership development programs are producing their intended outcomes?

The ideal candidate combines the quantitative rigor of an economist or decision scientist with the ability to translate sophisticated analyses into practical recommendations for senior business and HR leaders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build the decision science capability: Establish the methods, standards, tools, and research agenda for applying advanced quantitative techniques to workforce decisions.

  • Apply causal inference and econometrics: Distinguish correlation from causation and quantify the effects of workforce programs, policies, leadership practices, organizational changes, and talent investments.

  • Develop predictive and prescriptive models: Build models that anticipate workforce outcomes and identify actions leaders can take to improve them.

  • Design experiments and quasi-experiments: Establish rigorous approaches for testing workforce interventions and measuring their impact.

  • Apply economics to workforce decisions: Analyze labor supply and demand, incentives, compensation, mobility, productivity, talent allocation, skills, and other workforce dynamics through an economic lens.

  • Develop optimization and scenario models: Help leaders evaluate trade-offs involving cost, talent, productivity, employee outcomes, and business performance.

  • Lead a team of data scientists: Set technical direction, provide methodological coaching, prioritize work, and establish quality standards.

  • Partner with Workforce Intelligence colleagues: Translate enterprise workforce questions into analytical approaches and incorporate findings into broader workforce intelligence products.

  • Communicate complex findings clearly: Convert technical analyses into clear conclusions, implications, uncertainty ranges, and actionable recommendations for executive audiences.

  • Advance analytical rigor and responsible AI: Establish standards for model validity, explainability, bias testing, reproducibility, and the responsible use of employee data.

Job Contribution
