This remote position is a newly established leadership role, part of the Workday transition, and is the first step to enhancing our payroll structure.
We are seeking an experienced payroll leader who can build and transition a brand-new payroll organization for Johns Hopkins Health System, requiring deep payroll expertise, large-scale/multi-entity experience, strong stakeholder management skills, and the ability to successfully guide the organization through a complex transition.
The Director, Payroll serves as the strategic leader of the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) payroll function, providing oversight and direction for a team responsible for payroll processing, analytics, and reporting across all JHHS entities. This position is accountable for ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll operations for the health system, utilizing Workday and UKG Kronos systems. The Director will build and lead a scalable, high performing payroll organization focused on refined service delivery, standardization, continuous improvement, and readiness for technology and process modernization. This role requires strategic partnership with entity leaders, cross-functional collaboration with key stakeholders, and a commitment to operational excellence and regulatory compliance.
Qualifications and Physical Demands:- Bachelor's Degree Finance, Accounting, Business or related field (Required)
- Minimum of 7 Years of Experience in payroll operations (Required) including
- 3 Years of Experience in a Management Capacity Role in payroll (Required)
- Certified Payroll Professional (Preferred)
- Fundamental Payroll Certification (Preferred)
- May require occasional evening or weekend work during peak payroll processing periods or system implementations
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- While this a remote position from one of our registered states, this position will require travel to JHHS entities for meetings and relationship building, so should live a reasonable distance from Baltimore
- Large, multi-entity, healthcare experience is strongly desired
- Familiarity with complex employee groups (such as nursing pay practics) would be highly beneficial
- Workday experience and large-scale organization payroll environments are advantageous

Salary Range: Minimum 162,402.00/annually - Maximum 203,436.00/annually. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
