Baystate Health is seeking an experienced Director Patient Care Services - Behavioral Health & Medical Surgical Nursing to join our Patient Care Services, Nursing team at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. This leadership role provides strategic and operational oversight for inpatient nursing services, including Behavioral Health/Psychiatric and Medical Surgical patient care areas, working closely with nursing leadership, physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and operational partners to deliver high-quality patient care, exceptional patient experiences, and strong clinical outcomes.

The Director Patient Care Services - Behavioral Health & Medical Surgical Nursing role offers the opportunity to lead complex inpatient nursing operations, advance nursing practice, drive strategic initiatives, and influence organizational outcomes while supporting patients, families, and nursing teams across a broad spectrum of behavioral health, psychiatric, and acute care services.


The Director Patient Care Services - Behavioral Health & Medical Surgical Nursing Will:
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for Behavioral Health/Psychiatric and Medical Surgical nursing services, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and priorities.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate policies, programs, and services that support the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care.
  • Lead and support nursing leaders through coaching, mentoring, performance management, and professional development initiatives.
  • Foster collaborative relationships across disciplines and departments to improve patient outcomes, operational effectiveness, and organizational performance.
  • Partner with physician, nursing, and operational leaders to advance behavioral health initiatives, psychiatric nursing practice, patient safety, and workforce engagement.
  • Direct fiscal planning, budget development, resource allocation, and financial performance management across assigned areas.
  • Analyze operational, clinical, financial, quality, and patient experience metrics and implement improvement strategies as needed.
  • Promote a culture of evidence-based practice, trauma-informed care, innovation, professional development, and continuous learning throughout the organization.

Required Skills
  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Master's degree required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive nursing leadership experience in an acute care, behavioral health, psychiatric, or related inpatient clinical environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, operational leadership, human resource management, and financial management.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare delivery systems, healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and patient care operations.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills
  • Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Public Health, or related field.
  • Experience leading Behavioral Health, Psychiatric, Medical Surgical, or other inpatient nursing services within an acute care environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of behavioral health operations, psychiatric nursing practice, workforce engagement, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Strong communication, relationship-building, conflict-resolution, and change-management skills.
  • Experience managing complex budgets and achieving operational and financial performance goals.

Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.
