GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director of Student Counseling provides College-wide leadership and clinical oversight for the College's student counseling and mental health services, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, accessible, culturally responsive, and ethically sound services that support student well-being and success. As the College's lead clinical mental health administrator, the Director establishes standards of clinical practice, provides clinical supervision and consultation, oversees counseling operations and mental health crisis response protocols, and ensures consistent quality of care across College locations, instructional sites, and programs offered at other locations.

Working closely with the Dean of Students, the Director integrates counseling services within the College's coordinated care and case management framework and collaborates with faculty, staff, and community providers to strengthen referral pathways and continuity of care. The Director also oversees the effective use of virtual mental health services and other external mental health resources that expand student access to care.

The Director contributes clinical expertise related to student mental health, behavioral health trends, crisis intervention, prevention, and psychological well-being and collaborates with Student Wellness and Engagement and other College partners to support broader wellness, prevention, and student success strategies. This position is based on the West Barnstable campus and requires travel to College locations, instructional sites, and programs offered at other locations as needed.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

1. Provide clinical leadership and operational oversight for Student Counseling Services, including short-term counseling, crisis intervention, consultation, referral, and continuity of care.
2. Develop, implement, and continuously evaluate a comprehensive model of student mental health services that integrates College-based counseling, crisis response, consultation, referrals, community partnerships, virtual mental health services, and other resources to provide students with appropriate and timely levels of care.
3. Establish and maintain standards of clinical practice consistent with professional ethics, applicable laws and regulations, and evidence-informed practices, ensuring culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and student-centered care.
4. Provide clinical supervision, consultation, mentoring, and professional development for counseling staff and other clinical personnel and establish systems for clinical quality assurance, documentation review, professional competency, ethical practice, and adherence to applicable licensure and professional standards.
5. Provide College-wide clinical leadership for mental health crisis response, including clinical protocols, risk-assessment practices, consultation, referral and escalation procedures, emergency and community partnerships, and post-incident clinical review.
6. Provide leadership for the selection, implementation, oversight, and evaluation of virtual and externally provided mental health services, ensuring effective integration with College counseling, referral, crisis response, and coordinated care processes and monitoring utilization, access, quality, and effectiveness.
7. Work closely with the Dean of Students to integrate counseling and mental health services within the College's coordinated care and case management framework, establishing effective approaches to referral, consultation, communication, follow-up, and continuity of care while maintaining appropriate clinical confidentiality and professional boundaries.
8. Serve as the College's primary clinical advisor on student mental health, providing consultation and expertise to College leadership, faculty, staff, the CARE Team, and other partners regarding student mental health trends, behavioral health concerns, crisis response, and appropriate intervention and referral strategies.
9. Serve as a member of the College's CARE Team and provide clinical expertise related to student mental health, behavioral health, risk, referral, and intervention planning.
10. Maintain effective relationships and referral networks with community mental health providers, hospitals, crisis services, and other external resources to support continuity and appropriate levels of care.
11. Establish goals, outcomes, and performance measures for student counseling and mental health services and use utilization data, student needs, emerging trends, quality indicators, and assessment findings to guide service delivery, resource allocation, and continuous improvement.
12. Collaborate with the Director of Student Wellness and Engagement and other College partners on mental health education, prevention, awareness, stigma reduction, and help-seeking initiatives, contributing clinical expertise while maintaining appropriate distinctions between clinical counseling and population-level wellness promotion.
13. Contribute clinical expertise to divisional and institutional planning, policies, protocols, technology implementation, and initiatives related to student mental health, coordinated care, well-being, and student success.
14. Develop and manage Student Counseling Services resources, contracts, and operating priorities in collaboration with the Dean of Students, and contribute to budget development, grant opportunities, staffing plans, and resource allocation.
15. Perform other related duties consistent with the responsibilities of the position.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or closely related clinical field.
2. Current independent clinical licensure in Massachusetts (e.g., LMHC, LICSW, LMFT, Psychologist, or equivalent), or eligibility to obtain appropriate Massachusetts independent clinical licensure within a specified period.
3. Five (5) years of progressively responsible post-licensure clinical experience, including experience with young adults and/or college student populations.
4. Three (3) years of progressively responsible clinical leadership or supervisory experience, including supervision of professional clinical staff.
5. Demonstrated experience providing clinical leadership and developing or overseeing clinical services, professional staff, referral networks, crisis protocols, and coordinated approaches to mental health care.
6. Demonstrated expertise in crisis intervention, risk assessment, behavioral health consultation, professional ethics, confidentiality, and applicable clinical standards.
7. Demonstrated ability to provide collaborative clinical leadership, build effective partnerships, and communicate effectively with diverse students, employees, providers, and community partners.
8. Unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Experience providing clinical leadership in a college or university counseling center or comparable setting.
2. Experience providing clinical supervision to independently licensed and/or pre-licensed mental health professionals.
3. Experience implementing or overseeing virtual mental health services, external mental health partnerships, electronic health records, or other technology-enabled behavioral health services.
4. Experience with behavioral intervention/CARE teams, crisis response, and campus-based coordinated care.
5. Knowledge of community college students and contemporary issues affecting student mental health and well-being.

Additional Information:

COMPENSATION: Full-time, Non-Unit Professional Position. Annual Salary range of $120,000- $125,000 dependent on qualifications. Includes participation in a comprehensive employee benefits program and the option for membership in the Massachusetts State Employees' Retirement System.
