Full Job Description
Purpose of Position

The Director of Standards (DOS) is responsible for maintaining and improving the quality of FlightSafety International Training Programs and training delivery at the Learning Center.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Provide "hands on" supervision of the "New Hire" Instructor during their initial period of employment to ensure the Instructor's competency to train FlightSafety International's Customers.
  • Monitor, periodically, through random Quality Assurance observations, the teaching skills of all Pilot Training Instructors, during and beyond the initial period of employment, and confer with the Director of Training (DOT) regarding Instructors' capability.
  • Provide information and resources to individual Instructors in support of the conduct of Customer training. Maintain Instructor qualification in accordance with NOTE on the last page of this Job Description.
  • Maintain Instructor qualification in accordance with FlightSafety International's processes and procedures. (See Mentoring/Managerial Activities regarding Performance Appraisal input to DOT and Program Managers [PMs])
  • Ensure Learning Center compliance with all FlightSafety International and regulatory requirements by periodically comparing said requirements with day-to-day activities and any audit inspection results at the Center.
  • Maintain Instructor qualification in accordance with FlightSafety International's processes and procedures. -Responsible for monitoring and ensuring training compliance with FlightSafety International's 'Instructor Performance Standards'.
  • Act as a Ground and Flight (Simulator and/or Aircraft) Instructor, as required. (See appropriate Job Descriptions for required qualifications)
  • Ensure all Pilot Instructors are trained and qualified in accordance with FlightSafety International and regulatory requirements for the Center.-Schedule all "New Hire Instructor" training and supervise their training activities until released to respective Program Manager(s) (PMs).
  • Coordinate the assignment of "mentors" for New Hire Instructors.-Supervise and monitor the training and qualification of all new-hire Pilot Instructors.
  • Conduct Quality Assurance observations of Pilot Instructors during their initial six (6) months of employment, and randomly thereafter.
  • Establish in-house training programs to maintain and improve Instructor teaching skills.
  • Establish and implement a professional career development plan for every Instructor in conjunction with that Instructor's interest and ability.
  • Provide input to DOT, regarding observations of Instructor performance when appropriate Performance Appraisal documents (annual and promotion) are due, in order for the DOT to conduct Performance Appraisal conferences with employees.
  • Participate in the selection process of Pilot Instructors.
  • Provide orientation training and training on usage of appropriate software systems, as required of each employee, as needed.-Interview prospective teammates, evaluate and recommend employment.
  • Provide project direction(s), set priorities and monitor staff achievement.
  • Direct and/or facilitate departmental staff meetings.
  • Complete Performance Appraisal documents (6-month, annual, promotion) and conduct Performance Appraisal conferences with Teammates.
  • Coordinate departmental personnel matters with Teammate Resources.
  • May assume Maintenance Standards responsibilities depending on local center needs.


Minimum Education

  • Associate degree (A.A) from a two-year college or technical school preferred.


Minimum Experience

  • Ten (10) years of related experience.
  • Three (3) to four (4) years of management experience.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Minimum of six (6) months experience in a teaching/training environment, especially where the material is designed for adults (over 18 years) participants.
  • Basic office equipment (PC/Copier)
  • Basic office software (Access, MS Word, Outlook)-iOS devices


Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and communicate. The employee may be required to stand; walk; sit; positioning oneself and taste or smell. Must possess physical range of body motion to perform the following: Reach, exert pressure and manipulate the rudder controls and/or anti-torque with both feet. Reach and manipulate numerous controls within the Simulator device from the Instructor's chair. Enter and exit from the Simulator device via the provided ramp. Move between the Instructor station, screen and podium while instructing in the classroom. Exit from malfunctioned Simulator while the device is in a severely pitched attitude. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee may work in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
