Position Summary The Director of Software Development leads the strategic planning, development, and implementation of software solutions that support the mission and operations of a system-wide multi-campus community college system. This role oversees a team of software engineers to deliver high-quality, scalable, and secure applications that enhance student success, faculty engagement, and administrative efficiency. The Director collaborates with academic and administrative stakeholders to align technology initiatives with institutional goals and ensure compliance with regulatory and accessibility standards. This role requires hands-on development expertise, DevOps best practices, and experience with system integrations and modern web applications. This role requires senior software engineer expertise and experience in collaboration to work alongside analysts, ERP teams, and college stakeholders to streamline processes, build scalable solutions, and modernize legacy systems. This Director of Software Development has extensive experience with JavaScript, database technologies, cloud platforms, and software architecture-along with a deep understanding of DevOps principles in enterprise or public sector environments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities PRIMARY DUTIES:- Lead the design, development, and maintenance of enterprise applications, including student information systems (SIS), learning management systems (LMS), and administrative platforms.
- Design, develop, test, and maintain statewide systems such as DAX, PSL, and AAESAP.
- Build and manage integrations using Ellucian Data Connect and develop user facing components in Ellucian Experience.
- Collaborate with enterprise architects, ERP teams, and institutional stakeholders to align DevOps initiatives with strategic IT goals.
- Manage software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes, ensuring timely delivery of projects within scope and budget.
- Coordinate software release cycles and maintain application reliability, scalability, and performance.
- Supervise and mentor a team of software developers, QA engineers, and technical staff and contribute to a high-performing technical team culture.
- Collaborate with institutional leadership to identify and prioritize software needs.
- Establish and enforce coding standards, security protocols, and documentation practices.
- Monitor emerging technologies and recommend adoption strategies aligned with institutional goals.
- Identify automation opportunities and drive modernization of manual processes.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across application layers and environments.
SECONDARY DUTIES:- Support data governance and business intelligence initiatives.
- Participate in IT governance and strategic planning committees.
- Facilitate training and professional development for technical staff.
- Ensure compliance with FERPA, ADA, and other regulatory requirements.
- Represent the college system in statewide or national technology forums.
- Perform other IT software development and support tasks for the ACCS system office as needed and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications REQUIRED:- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in software development, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.

- Advanced proficiency in:
- JavaScript, React, .NET/C#, Java
- SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle
- Experience with transactional database and/or data warehouse design
- Experience writing Stored Procedures

- CI/CD tools and version control (Git, GitHub, DevOps pipelines)

- Experience with web design technologies, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Bootstrap

- Experience with unit and/or integration testing, code reviews and continuous integration

- Experience with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) and data privacy regulations.
- Experience with Ellucian Banner and its related ERP modules (Finance, HR, Student Services, etc.).
- Familiarity with Ellucian's Ethos Data Model APIs and SDKs.
- Past work within higher education, government agencies, or large-scale integrations.
- Strong understanding of security, compliance, and accessibility standards in public IT environments.

Teachers Retirement System is a state-mandated program where a percentage of your salary is withheld per pay period for an individual's retirement account.
