Description
Hampton WellNest seeks an experienced and innovative pharmacy leader to serve as Director of Pharmacy and Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC). The Director will provide strategic, operational, clinical, regulatory, financial, and administrative leadership for Hampton WellNest's pharmacy.
In addition to overseeing daily pharmacy practice and fulfilling all legal responsibilities of the PIC, the Director will manage the pharmacy's compliance infrastructure, payer and PBM relationships, credentialing, financial performance, vendor relationships, clinical services, staff development, and community engagement. The Director will help establish the pharmacy as a sustainable, patient-centered operation that expands access to medications and integrated healthcare services.
Examples of Duties
Leadership and Pharmacy Operations
• Provide strategic and operational leadership for all pharmacy services.
• Direct daily pharmacy operations, including prescription processing, dispensing, counseling, medication management, workflow, staffing, inventory, technology, and customer service.
• Develop operational priorities, performance goals, growth strategies, and new service lines.
• Establish policies, procedures, workflows, quality controls, and business-continuity plans.
• Advise Hampton WellNest leadership on pharmacy operations, regulations, reimbursement, financial performance, and growth opportunities.
Pharmacist-in-Charge and Regulatory Compliance
• Serve as the legally designated PIC and fulfill all requirements of the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
• Maintain the pharmacy permit and ensure ongoing inspection readiness.
• Ensure compliance with federal and state pharmacy laws, DEA and controlled-substance requirements, HIPAA, medication-safety standards, and University policies.
• Oversee medication procurement, storage, security, dispensing, inventory, recalls, returns, disposal, and controlled-substance accountability.
• Maintain required records, policies, compliance calendars, and staff training.
• Monitor regulatory changes and update pharmacy operations accordingly.
Payer Contracting and Credentialing
• Manage relationships and participation with commercial payers, Medicare programs, PBMs, pharmacy networks, and Pharmacy Services Administrative Organizations.
• Oversee contracting, enrollment, credentialing, recredentialing, audits, and network-maintenance requirements.
• Maintain pharmacy and pharmacist information through applicable systems, including CAQH, Availity, NCPDP, NPI/NPPES, PECOS, and other enrollment platforms.
• Monitor reimbursement, rejected claims, underpayments, payer performance, and audit exposure.
• Evaluate DMEPOS enrollment and other reimbursement opportunities when appropriate.
Financial and Business Management
• Assist with development and management of the pharmacy's operating and capital budgets.
• Monitor revenue, expenses, cost of goods, gross margin, payer mix, inventory investment, reimbursement, and contract performance.
• Assist in the preparation of performance reports, and recommendations for new services or expansion.
• Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, prescription capture, patient access, and financial sustainability.
• Assist with managing wholesaler, vendor, equipment, technology, and supply-chain relationships.
Clinical Services and Patient Care
• Provide pharmacist services consistent with Virginia law and professional standards.
• Support medication counseling, medication reconciliation, adherence, medication therapy management, immunizations, and other pharmacist-led services.
• Collaborate with primary care, behavioral health, nursing, pharmacy, and other health professionals to promote coordinated care.
• Develop services supporting chronic disease management, preventive health, population health, and health equity.
• Maintain appropriate clinical documentation and quality standards.
Personnel, Quality, and Community Engagement
• Recruit, supervise, schedule, evaluate, and develop pharmacists, technicians, student pharmacists, and other pharmacy personnel.
• Establish orientation, competency, training, and performance-management processes.
• Develop and monitor performance indicators related to safety, access, prescription volume, reimbursement, inventory, patient satisfaction, clinical interventions, and financial performance.
• Review medication incidents, complaints, audit findings, and operational concerns and implement corrective actions.
• Build partnerships with healthcare providers, community organizations, payers, public agencies, and other stakeholders.
• Support health fairs, immunization initiatives, medication education, student learning, interprofessional education, and community outreach.
Typical Qualifications
• Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited institution.
• Active, unrestricted Virginia pharmacist license, or eligibility to obtain licensure before appointment.
• Eligibility to serve as PIC under Virginia requirements.
• At least five years of progressively responsible pharmacy practice experience, preferably in community, ambulatory, retail, or integrated care.
• Pharmacy leadership, management, or supervisory experience.
• Strong knowledge of pharmacy law, regulatory compliance, medication safety, inventory management, purchasing, and personnel supervision.
• Experience developing pharmacy policies, procedures, compliance systems, or operational workflows.
• Strong analytical, communication, organizational, project-management, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred qualifications include:
• Previous experience serving as a PIC.
• Experience opening, expanding, or restructuring a community or ambulatory pharmacy.
• Experience with PBM and payer contracting, credentialing, reimbursement, Medicare enrollment, or PSAO relationships.
• Experience with pharmacy budgeting, financial management, wholesaler relations, and business development.
• Experience in community health, integrated care, population health, or services for underserved populations.
• Immunization certification and current CPR/BLS certification, as appropriate.
Supplemental Information
This is a full-time, primarily on-site leadership position. Occasional evening, weekend, emergency, or community-outreach activities may be required. Important Core Competencies include:
