Job Responsibilities

- Strong leadership skills, high integrity, accountability,excellent communication, empathy and compassion, conflict resolution,resourcefulness, critical thinking, self-motivation, adaptability, and a strongcommitment to quality and ethics are all necessary to be successful in thisrole.

- Plans, organizes, develops and directs the overalloperation of our nursing department in accordance with federal, state and localstandards, guidelines and regulations that govern our community to ensure thehighest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.

- Maintains the nursing schedule, coordinates time offand coverage, and serves as a back-up for call-ins or staffing concerns.Approves any and all over-time and obtains prior approval from the ExecutiveAdministrator. Meets and exceeds goals for over-time. Calculates the number ofdirect nursing care to resident ratios each day; meets goals set for PPDratios. Ensures that the community is fully staffed for all shifts providingthe highest quality of resident care.

- Develops, maintains and periodically updates writtenpolicies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursingdepartment as well as an ongoing quality assurance program.

- Maintains a reference library of written nursingmaterials (Regulations, Standards of Practice, Training, etc.) that will assistthe nursing department in meeting the day-to-day needs of the residents.

- Makes written and oral reports/recommendations to theAdministrator as necessary/required concerning the operation of the nursingdepartment.

- Develops methods for coordination of nursing serviceswith other resident services to ensure the continuity of the residents' totalregimen of care.

- Assists in developing and delivering training fornursing department staff as well as all staff in the community.

- Serves as a primary/immediate contact when residentabuse, neglect and/or exploitation is suspected. Works with a team to conductinvestigations, maintaining the highest level of confidentiality, and reportsfindings to the Kansas Department on Aging.

- Oversees the delivery of quality care and services to ourresidents

- Strives to maintain a safe working environment

- Oversees and works closely with the InfectionPreventionist for infection control policies, procedures, and coaching.

- Works closely with the Director of Human Resourceswhen evaluating, disciplining, coaching and educating employees.

- Works closely with the pharmacy, Team Health, and anyother vendors that may be included in resident care.

- Serves on, participates in, leads and attends variouscommittees of the community.

- Interviews and selects new nursing department employees.

- Leads and develops staff including nurses, aides, nursemanagers, and MDS coordinators. Completes coaching and annual performancereviews for all staff.

- Works with Human Resources on retention planning

- Promotes the physical, personal, and emotional wellbeingof each resident

- Reviews and resolves resident and family complaints and/orgrievances, meets with residents and families as needed to assist in ensuringthe resident and family are happy with the care provided.

- Routinely conducts rounds throughout all areas of thefacility ensuring nursing employees are compliant with policies/regulations andthe highest level of resident care is being provided.

- Provides nursing care as necessary.

- Serves as second in command when the ExecutiveAdministrator is unavailable.

- Reviews budget weekly to ensure nursing is staying withinthe budget that is provided

- Keeps abreast of economic conditions/situations,regulations, and nursing standards to ensure the continued ability to providequality care.

- Ensures nursing staff are compliant on all requiredtraining and regulatory documentation

- Ensures effective communication is utilized with communitystaff

- Works well with others and contributes to creating aneffective interdisciplinary team

- Takes initiative with the capability to engage in conflictresolution for residents, families, staff, and others as needed.

- Participates in staff appreciation events and marketingevents as needed

- This position requires the Director of Nursing toserve as primary on call for the nursing department Monday through Friday. Mustbe able to take emergency calls 24 hours a day.

- Weekend on-call rotation every 5 weekends.

- Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

- This is a salaried position with normal businesshours worked in the building and an on-call schedule. There is an occasionalneed for after-hours availability.

- Must possess, as a minimum, a Nursing Degree from anaccredited college or university and a current, unencumbered active license topractice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Kansas.

- Previous long-term care experience required.

- Previous supervisory experience required. Experienceleading large teams of staff and managers is highly preferred.

- Must highly value teamwork within the nursingdepartment and on the interdisciplinary team.

- This position requires the highest level ofprofessionalism and confidentiality.

- Must have the ability to make tough decisions underpressure

- Must serve as an educator and helper to the nursingdepartment staff, and must have experience in leading a team and maintainingpositive employee relations.

- This position works in the office area(s) and throughoutthe entire building and is subject to frequent interruptions.

- This position is involved with residents, staff, visitors,government agencies, etc under all conditions and circumstances. and is subjectto hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, staff, andvisitors.
