Full Job Description
As the Director of Marketing & Creative, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, you will lead our marketing efforts to elevate our brand, engage with key audiences, and drive support for our vital conservation work. Your strategic vision and creative execution will bring our mission to life, inspiring action to protect and restore healthy redwood forests for the benefit of all people.

Essential Duties:

Marketing & Creative Strategy & Delivery
  • Develop and execute innovative marketing strategies and campaigns, including both traditional and digital media, to cultivate and deepen relationships with the organization's key audiences, which include our members, donors, environmental stakeholders and partners, and the public.
  • Lead external creative consultants and internal staff (including photographers, videographers, editors, and designers) to produce multimedia content, including photo and video, print and digital marketing collateral, podcasts, and interactive experiences, to enhance brand storytelling and engage audiences across platforms.
  • Work in partnership with the Editorial Director and Director of Communications to create an integrated strategy that engages, informs, and motivates across all channels and touchpoints, ensuring our message is consistent, compelling, and impactful.
  • Utilize market research and data-driven insights to identify and define new audiences and understand their connection to our mission.
  • Maintain and evolve brand identity guidelines that communicate our values, impact, and initiatives with clarity and passion while strengthening our brand recognition and audience engagement.
  • Lead the end-to-end planning, execution, and optimization of awareness and engagement campaigns across multiple platforms, including digital, social media, email, and in-person touchpoints.
  • Oversee website updates and maintenance, including content creation, design updates, and functionality to enhance user engagement and drive conversions.
  • Optimize our online presence through targeted campaigns, SEO/SEM/GEO (search, search engine marketing, and generative engine optimization), email, SMS, and social media engagement.
  • Collaborate with Development to spearhead digital marketing efforts in alignment with annual fundraising, public awareness, and new donor cultivation.
  • Manage budgets and timelines, ensuring high-quality outcomes that meet brand standards.


Trends and Measurement
  • Track emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in engagement and growth marketing, and incorporate them as appropriate.
  • Champion innovation and experimentation to stay ahead of the curve in engaging our audience effectively.
  • Establish measurement frameworks that assess relevance, audience engagement, brand affinity, and impact.
  • Analyze and report on audience growth, using insights to drive continuous improvement and innovation in our strategies.


Leadership & Collaboration
  • Lead and develop a talented team of three marketing professionals, creating an environment where people feel supported, challenged, and empowered to grow, collaborate, and produce exceptional work.
  • Provide clear direction, meaningful coaching, and opportunities for ownership while fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and shared success.
  • Serve as a strategic leader within the MarComm team, helping shape the League's audience engagement, strengthen our brand, and advance conservation through compelling storytelling and marketing excellence
  • Serve as the marketing liaison with the Development team and collaborate closely across Programming, Legal, and the Executive Team to ensure alignment and integration of organizational initiatives.


Essential Qualifications:
  • A strategic and creative marketing leader with 7+ years experience building brands, engaging audiences, and translating complex ideas into compelling stories that inspire action. Experience in nonprofit, conservation, outdoor recreation, or other mission-driven organizations is valued but not required.
  • A strategic thinker who can translate complex ideas, including scientific or technical information, into powerful narratives that inspire action.
  • Excellent verbal, visual, and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate ideas clearly and effectively to diverse audiences at any length.
  • A leader with a proven track record of guiding teams to achieve exceptional results through creativity and collaboration.
  • A data-driven decision-maker, able to own and analyze metrics, establish growth strategies, and amplify impact.
  • A leader who balances urgency with rigor to move efficiently under pressure without cutting corners on quality or accuracy.
  • Passionate about conservation and eager to apply your marketing expertise to a vital conservation mission.

We offer competitive salaries commensurate with experience and internal/external equity considerations; the salary for this role is expected to fall in the range of $150,000-175,000 per year.

Working Conditions and Location

This position based out of our San Francisco, California headquarters, with a minimum two day in-office presence (currently Tuesdays & Thursdays) aligned with department and organizational needs for in person collaboration, connection and inspiration. Periodic travel throughout California, including visits to redwood and giant sequoia landscapes is required. On occasion evening or weekend work may be required.
