The Opportunity

Women's College Hospital Foundation is looking for our next Director of Individual Giving, a key role that provides strategic leadership for the Foundation's individual giving program, encompassing Leadership, Legacy and Major Giving.

Reporting to the Vice President, Philanthropy and Partnerships, the Director is responsible for developing and executing integrated strategies that identify, acquire, engage, retain, upgrade and steward individual donors throughout their philanthropic journey. The Director will lead the growth and performance of the Individual Giving portfolio, translating organizational priorities and philanthropic opportunities into compelling donor strategies and measurable revenue outcomes. The Director will maintain a select portfolio of major gift prospects and donors, while providing leadership, coaching and strategic direction to the Individual Giving team. Working collaboratively across the Foundation teams - Philanthropy and Partnerships, Donor Engagement and Impact, Marketing & Communications, Finance and Administration- the Director will ensure a meaningful donor experience and build a strong pipeline of individual supporters.

Key Accountabilities

The Director, Individual Giving will:
  • Provide strategic leadership for the overall growth and success of the Foundation's Individual Giving program, including Leadership, Legacy and Major Giving.
  • In collaboration with the Vice President, Philanthropy and Partnerships, develop and implement multi-year growth strategies, annual work plans, revenue targets and performance measures for Individual Giving.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators across all Individual Giving revenue streams, using data and analytics to evaluate performance, identify opportunities and inform decision-making.
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase donor lifetime value and movement across the individual giving pipeline, through Leadership, Major and Legacy Giving.
  • Develop strong relationships with donors, prospects, volunteers, hospital leaders, researchers, clinicians and other key stakeholders.
  • Partner with the Director, Donor Engagement and Impact to develop and execute customized stewardship strategies for individual donors.
  • Ensure timely, accurate and meaningful reporting on Individual Giving performance, pipeline development, revenue and donor engagement.
  • Collaborate with Annual Giving to establish clear strategies and pathways for identifying and moving high-potential Annual Giving donors into Leadership and Major Giving portfolios.
  • Ensure strong integration between Leadership, Legacy and Major Giving strategies, while maximizing philanthropic opportunities.


Leadership Giving

The Director will provide strategic leadership for the growth, development and sustainability of the Foundation's Leadership portfolio, serving as a critical bridge between Annual Giving and Major Gifts.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive Leadership Giving strategy focused on donor identification, qualification, acquisition, retention, reactivation, upgrading and stewardship.
  • Establish clear criteria for identifying donors with the capacity and inclination to move from Annual Giving into Leadership and Major Giving.
  • Working with the Manager of Leadership Giving, support the development of individualized strategies for priority Leadership donors and prospects.
  • Establish annual revenue, retention, upgrade and pipeline targets and monitor performance against established KPIs.
  • Use segmentation, analytics and donor behaviour to inform portfolio strategy, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Monitor portfolio health, donor movement and pipeline progression through regular portfolio reviews and data analysis.


Legacy Giving

The Director will lead the strategy, growth and execution of the Foundation's Legacy Giving program, with a focus on building a sustainable long-term pipeline of future gifts. Key responsibilities include:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive Legacy Giving strategy aligned with the Foundation's long-term fundraising objectives.
  • Develop strategies to identify, qualify, cultivate and steward prospective legacy donors.
  • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of documented and prospective legacy commitments.
  • Develop and implement legacy donor acquisition and engagement strategies across Annual Giving, Major Gifts and other donor programs.
  • Establish appropriate metrics and reporting mechanisms to measure legacy pipeline growth, commitments and realized gifts.
  • Establish, recruit and manage the Planned Giving Advisory Committee comprised of professional advisors and community leaders who can support the growth, visibility and credibility of the Foundation's Legacy Giving program.
  • Develop compelling legacy giving materials, proposals and donor communications in partnership with Marketing & Communications.


Major Gifts

The Director will maintain a select portfolio of major gift prospects and donors while providing strategic leadership to the Individual Giving team's major gift activity. Key responsibilities include:
  • Lead the development and execution of individualized strategies for major gift opportunities of $100,000 or more.
  • Manage a portfolio of qualified major gift prospects and donors, with an emphasis on strategic cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Conduct approximately 20-30 meaningful donor and prospect interactions per month, including portfolio calls, meetings and other relationship-building activities.
  • Build and maintain a robust major gift pipeline, identifying 75 or more new qualified prospects annually through research, referrals, networking and relationship mapping.
  • Develop compelling proposals, cases for support and impact reports in collaboration with the VP, Philanthropy, hospital leadership and other subject matter experts.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with senior hospital researchers, clinicians and administrative leaders to translate institutional priorities into compelling philanthropic opportunities.
  • Support senior volunteers, including members of the Development Committee and Board of Directors, in donor identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.


Team Leadership & Management

The Director will provide leadership, coaching and strategic direction to the Individual Giving team, fostering a high-performing, collaborative and accountable culture. Key responsibilities include:
  • Recruit, onboard, coach and performance manage 3 - 4 members of the Individual Giving team, supporting professional growth, performance and achievement of fundraising goals.
  • Establish clear expectations, objectives, performance measures and work plans for team members.
  • Provide strategic direction and coaching on portfolio development, donor strategy, solicitation planning, stewardship and pipeline management.
  • Conduct regular portfolio reviews and ensure team members are actively managing and advancing their portfolios.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, systems and cross-functional collaboration within Individual Giving.
  • Promote consistent fundraising practices and approaches, and ethical standards across the team.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, initiative, accountability, growth, innovation and results.
  • Create an environment of shared accountability, where team members are expected to actively manage their portfolios, build pipelines and achieve measurable fundraising outcomes.
  • Facilitate regular team discussions on prospect strategy, donor movement, solicitation planning and opportunities for cross-portfolio collaboration.


Qualifications & Experience
  • University degree and/or equivalent education and a minimum of 7 years' experience, preferably within a complex healthcare, academic, research or charitable environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in major gift fundraising, including independently securing significant philanthropic commitments.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing Individual Giving portfolios, including donor qualification, retention, upgrading and pipeline development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Legacy Giving principles, practices and donor engagement strategies, with experience building and managing a legacy pipeline.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, coaching and developing fundraising professionals and building high-performing teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage fundraising strategies, budgets, work plans, pipelines and performance metrics.
  • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated ability to use data and insights to inform fundraising strategy and decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with donors, volunteers, senior leaders and internal stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship-building, listening and networking skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop compelling donor communications and proposals.
  • Strong strategic thinking, judgment and problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance long-term strategy with operational execution.
  • Highly organized, self-directed and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness and ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as required to effectively engage donors and volunteers.
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation is an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with Raiser's Edge or an equivalent fundraising CRM/database is an asset.


Salary Range: $117,500 - $130,000. Eligibility for merit pay and comprehensive benefits, including Healthcare Ontario Pension Plan enrollment.
