DescriptionThe Bristol Bay Foundation (BBF) is a small organization with a complex financial environment that includes nonprofit and private foundation requirements, federal grants and restricted funds, an investment portfolio, multiple revenue sources, and ongoing financial partnerships with Bristol Bay Native Corporation (BBNC). The Director of Finance leads the overall finance function and provides forward-looking financial analysis and guidance to support organizational decision-making.
The Director of Finance provides strategic financial leadership and organizational stewardship for Bristol Bay Foundation. As a member of BBF's senior leadership team, the Director works closely with the President & CEO, Board of Directors, staff, and external partners to support the Foundation's financial health, strengthen its revenue model, and advance long-term financial sustainability.
The Director supervises the Accountant, and the Finance & Grants Manager, who serves as BBF's primary accounting and grants finance professional. The Director is responsible for ensuring BBF has strong financial systems, practices, partnerships, and staff capacity to support its growing work.
Strategic Finance, Revenue & Sustainability
- Serve as a member of BBF's senior leadership team and provide financial analysis and guidance for organizational decisions.
- Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, multi-year financial modeling, and long-term financial planning.
- Monitor financial performance, revenue trends, cash flow, emerging financial risks, and opportunities.
- Analyze BBF's revenue model, funding mix, concentration risks, future resource needs, and develop scenarios to support long-term sustainability.
- Partner with the President & CEO, and Development and Program leadership to evaluate significant funding opportunities, organizational investments, and growth decisions.
- Lead the financial components of BBF's long-term business and sustainability planning.
- Provide clear financial information and recommendations to the President & CEO, leadership team, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors.
- Staff the Board Finance Committee.
Financial Operations, Grants & Compliance
- Provide overall leadership and oversight of BBF's accounting, grants finance, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance functions.
- Ensure BBF maintains appropriate accounting and grants management capacity, policies, procedures, segregation of duties, documentation, and backup coverage.
- Oversee cash flow and liquidity planning and ensure timely, accurate financial reporting.
- Lead BBF's annual Financial Statement Audit, Single Audit, and oversee preparation of Form 990-PF and other required financial and regulatory filings.
- Ensure appropriate financial oversight and compliance with federal grants and restricted funds, including Uniform Guidance and funder requirements.
- Manage BBF's financial relationship with BBNC, coordinating only those functions and services that BBNC continues to provide or support and periodically evaluating opportunities for BBF to assume greater responsibility.
- Lead and develop the Finance & Grants Manager and ensure the Finance team has the expertise and capacity needed to support BBF's mission.
Financial Systems & Integration
- Lead the assessment, selection, implementation, and ongoing improvement of BBF's financial systems and technology.
- Develop a financial systems approach appropriate to BBF's size, complexity, grant portfolio, reporting needs, and growth.
- Lead integration of accounting and financial systems with scholarship administration, grants management, budgeting, reporting, and other organizational systems.
- Partner with Finance and program staff, BBNC, vendors, and consultants to design effective financial workflows and integrations.
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual processes, improve data quality and reporting, and strengthen internal controls.
- Lead significant financial systems transitions, including implementation planning, documentation, training, and adoption.
Investments, Endowment & External Financial Partners
- Lead BBF's relationship with its Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) in partnership with the President & CEO and Finance Committee.
- Monitor investment and endowment performance, asset allocation, liquidity, distributions, fees, risk, and compliance with BBF's Investment Policy Statement.
- Ensure the President & CEO, Finance Committee, and Board receive clear and useful investment reporting and analysis.
- Integrate investment performance, endowment distributions, reserves, and liquidity needs into BBF's financial forecasts and long-term sustainability planning.
- Support the Finance Committee and Board in investment policy, reserve, endowment, and other long-term financial decisions.
- Manage key relationships with auditors, tax professionals, financial institutions, and other external financial partners.
Requirements- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, economics, or a related field; a Master's degree or MBA is a plus.
- CPA preferred. An equivalent combination of professional credentials and directly relevant nonprofit, foundation, federal award, and financial leadership experience will be considered.
- At least 7-10 years of progressively responsible finance and accounting leadership experience, including oversight of an organizational finance function.
- Demonstrated experience leading annual budgeting, forecasting, multi-year modeling, and long-term financial and sustainability planning.
- Strong technical knowledge of nonprofit GAAP, including net asset classification, restricted funds, financial statement preparation, and disclosures under ASC 958, with direct experience leading or overseeing annual financial statement audits and federal Single Audits, including internal controls, segregation of duties, and Uniform Guidance compliance under 2 CFR 200.
- Working knowledge of nonprofit tax and regulatory requirements, including Form 990 (or Form 990-PF) and related filings.
- Experience overseeing investments, endowment, or long-term asset management and working with investment advisors or an OCIO, a Finance Committee, and a Board.
- Experience leading financial systems selection, implementation, and integration.
- Knowledge of Bristol Bay culture and communities and commitment to BBF's mission, vision, and values.
