Location: The Lexington Hotel NYC

Position Type: Full-Time

The Director of Engineering and Security is responsible for leading and overseeing the maintenance of the building and grounds, with particular attention to safety, security, and asset protection. This role directs, assigns, tracks, and follows up on the status of work assigned to staff and contractors, and drives guest and team member satisfaction through effective communication, training, and leadership. The Director also owns the engineering and security budgets, capital expenditure planning, preventative maintenance programs, energy conservation initiatives, and overall security strategy for the property.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management
  • Establish and maintain open, collaborative relationships with team members across all departments
  • Lead, supervise, and hold accountable the day-to-day operations of the Engineering and Security departments
  • Communicate business objectives, expectations, and performance recognition on an ongoing basis
  • Lead interviews and hiring for Engineering and Security team members with appropriate skill sets
  • Communicate performance expectations in accordance with job descriptions; conduct performance reviews
  • Ensure all team members have the proper supplies, equipment, and uniforms
  • Empower team members to deliver excellent guest service and lead by example
  • Train team members in safety, security, and emergency response procedures

Engineering & Facilities Oversight
  • Direct the inspection and upkeep of the physical property, including equipment, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, water treatment, electrical, and life safety systems
  • Determine and prioritize work required across all building systems on a regular basis
  • Monitor timeliness and quality of completion of repair work orders
  • Recommend and arrange additional services such as painting, repairs, renovations, and replacement of furnishings and equipment
  • Select, order, and purchase new equipment, supplies, and furnishings
  • Operate generators and fire pumps as necessary
  • Repair equipment (e.g., refrigeration, laundry) as necessary
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and compliance documentation

Security & Risk Management
  • Develop, implement, and oversee the property's overall security strategy, policies, and procedures
  • Direct security staffing, patrols, surveillance systems, and access control to protect guests, team members, and assets
  • Serve as the property's primary point of contact for security incidents, investigations, and law enforcement coordination
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and audits of security and life safety systems
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal security, fire, and safety regulations
  • Conduct fire drills and evacuation drills on a quarterly basis for compliance
  • Provide 24/7 emergency response leadership for both engineering and security incidents

Financial & Strategic Management
  • Manage the Engineering and Security department budgets, including capital expenditures and preventative maintenance planning
  • Drive energy conservation initiatives across the property
  • Read, analyze, and report on P&L, budget, and financial statements relevant to department operations

Requirements
  • Hotel/College training required
  • High school diploma (or equivalency) required;
  • Fire Life Safety Director (FLSD) Certification, required
  • L11 and L87 experience preferred
  • Stationary Engineer's license, if required by local code
  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler operations, and general facilities maintenance
  • Substantial knowledge of local laws, building codes, and security regulations
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in Engineering, Facilities, or Security management, including supervisory/leadership experience
  • Strong understanding of security systems, protocols, and emergency management best practices
  • Ability to read and analyze P&L, budgets, and financial statements
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working in a labor-organized environment preferred
  • Effective listening skills to understand and resolve concerns from team members and guests
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills
  • Solid background in OSHA regulations, emergency planning, and incident response; ensures compliance with all legal safety requirements
  • Ability to maintain focus and composure under frequent, stressful, or unusual interruptions
  • Ability to de-escalate situations and remain calm under pressure
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Excellent time management and multitasking ability in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team-building skills
  • Self-motivated with a hands-on, can-do attitude
