SafeTraces is a dual use technology company in the San Francisco Bay Area with a ground-breaking platform for predicting, detecting, and preventing harmful pathogen exposures in indoor environments. Developed with National Institutes of Health support, our award-winning technology integrates hardware, software, and consumables and has been used extensively across military and civilian building portfolios including Amazon, the Mayo Clinic, and the Department of War (DoW) to stop infectious, contamination, and bioterror events before they occur.

About the position

We are looking for a mechanical or related Director of Engineering who is responsible for driving critical hardware-based engineering of an airborne pathogen sensor based on PCR and microfluidics technology. This includes directing outsourced design and manufacturing teams and requires outstanding cross-functional and cross-organizational management skills.

What you'll be doing:

  • Manage call aspects of complex projects from concept to manufacturing with a systematic phase gate approach, including mechanical and electrical engineering, firmware (via software team) optics, and microfluidics.
  • Maintain compliance with GMP and DoW requirements, using significant experience engineering in highly regulated environments.
  • Collaborate with R&D, Marketing, Sales, etc.
  • Budget and manage Engineering
  • Program-manage engineering and product development from concept through production release via outsourced partners
  • Define control system requirements, design specs, validation testing and qualification
  • Meet GMP and DoD requirements for BOM, design teams, and validation requirements
  • Ensure adequate document and change management systems and compliance
  • Manage outsourced design and manufacturing partners to requirements, schedule, and budget. Make necessary
  • Hands-on work in prototype build, validation, optimization
  • Communicate effectively across departments to get buy-in and drive timely decisions
  • Manage relevant procurement activities (contracts, purchasing, etc.)
  • Excellent communication and proven management skills
