Job Summary
We are seeking a Director of Design for a direct hire opportunity in Jackson, WI with a growing leader in the commercial and specialty construction industry. This is a highly visible, hands-on leadership role for a design professional who can guide complex projects from concept through execution while leading a talented technical design team.
The Director of Design will serve as a key technical authority, ensuring architectural concepts, drawings, and design packages are accurate, buildable, and aligned with client expectations. Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 3 to 5 technical designers while managing daily workloads, priorities, and project schedules.
- Review architectural drawings, blueprints, and design packages for accuracy, feasibility, constructability, and compliance with client specifications.
- Serve as the technical resource for determining whether complex design concepts can be successfully built in the field.
- Collaborate with General Contractors, preconstruction teams, Project Managers, and field operations to improve design deliverables and project execution.
- Lead internal design review meetings to improve drawing standards, workflows, cost efficiency, and overall project outcomes.
- Manage design team onboarding, training, performance coaching, and ongoing talent development.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $100,000 to $110,000 per year.

Required Qualifications and Skills
- Lead technical design efforts for complex commercial and specialty construction projects.
- Review and validate architectural drawings, blueprints, and design packages for constructability.
- Manage design team priorities, project schedules, workflows, and performance.
- Partner cross-functionally with construction, preconstruction, project management, and field teams.
- Associate's degree in drafting, architecture, or a closely related technical field.
- 7+ years of progressive design experience within commercial construction, architecture, structural design, or a specialized build environment.
- 3+ years of formal team leadership or management experience.
- Strong understanding of architectural drawings, blueprints, technical design packages, and field constructability.
- Demonstrated experience with resource planning, workflow management, budget oversight, and team performance tracking.
- Advanced proficiency with drafting and modeling software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, Procore, or similar platforms.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple overlapping deadlines in a fast-paced construction project environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with shotcrete, architectural concrete, themed construction, specialty builds, or immersive and experiential environments.
- Background supporting high-profile, complex, or custom commercial construction projects.
- Experience improving design standards, drafting processes, and technical review workflows.
