Position Description The Director of Data and Technology is responsible for leading and scaling our technology, data, and security infrastructure in support of our mission to expand abortion access. This role works strategically with CAF's leadership team to maintain an overarching vision for IT strategy, strengthen core infrastructure and improve day-to-day systems. The Director of Data and Technology will play a critical role in building a secure, scalable, and well-governed technology environment in a fast-growing, mission-driven organization. This role is for both an individual contributor and a manager able to build and maintain CAF's technology stack, align a product roadmap with the organization's unique needs, and manage both internal staff and outside consultants. Overseeing a lean but growing team, this person will need to establish an informed "build vs buy" strategy that accounts for the organization's distinct needs and resources as well as the urgency of its mission.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $95,428-$117,813 (based on experience and qualifications).

Work Schedule & Location
- A full-time work week is a minimum of 32 hours over four days.
- Illinois residence is required. Relocation fees are not provided by CAF.
- Hybrid schedule: minimum two days in the office per week (West Loop, Chicago).
Essential Job Functions
Strategic Oversight & Planning (approximately 75%)
- Own and execute CAF's IT strategy, product roadmap, and overall technology strategy
- Establish and enforce IT policies, standards, and best practices (security, access controls, data governance, disaster recovery)
- Manage and optimize cloud-based tools and environments
- Evaluate emerging data technologies and recommend adoption strategies
- Own maintenance, security and updates of CAF databases, case management software, CRM, and analytics tools
- Lead data security, privacy, and risk mitigation efforts in a highly sensitive environment
- Design and implement a modern telecommunications/VoIP strategy
- Liaise with external IT partners and vendors
- Develop and monitor IT budget
- Evaluate long-term resourcing of department
- Provide suggestions and education to all departments to optimize their workflows using technology innovations
Staff Supervision & Culture Building (approximately 20%)
- Provide leadership, supervision, coaching, and support to Database Manager
- Identify resourcing and structural needs across programs teams to ensure sustainability and alignment
- Model and build organizational practices rooted in a pursuit of excellence in care for callers, grounded in reproductive justice and trauma-informed care
- Foster a workplace culture of curiosity, care, feedback, and shared responsibility.
Other (approximately 5%)
- Co-create and maintain an organizational culture that fosters deep collaboration, trust, and coordination across functional areas.
- Represent CAF in external partnerships, coalitions, and movement building spaces
- Actively participate in required CAF meetings and respond in a timely manner to CAF staff communications.
- When required, participate in reproductive justice movement-building initiatives
- Update professional knowledge by participating in educational opportunities approved by CAF and professional organizations as relevant to your role.

Qualifications & Experience
- 7+ years of experience in software development, IT and/or product management roles
- 3+ years of experience in team leadership, people management, and staff development
- Experience building or scaling IT functions in small/mid-sized organizations
- Strong experience with:
- IT operations & systems administration
- Cloud/SaaS environments (Google Workspace, etc.)
- Databases, analytics tools, and CRM platforms
- Managing staff and technical consultants
- Experience with IT security, data privacy, and risk management frameworks
- Proven ability to implement IT policies, governance, and best practices
- Strong programming skills in multiple languages such as Python, SQL, Scala, or Java
- Experience with Telecom/VoIP system implementation
- Deep commitment to reproductive justice and experience working in a mission-driven, equity-focused environment
- Experience supporting training and change management efforts with non-technical teams
- Self-motivated, resourceful, adaptive, responsive, and able to make strategic decisions without significant supervision
- Exceptional project management skills, including coordinating multiple projects with diverse stakeholders and tight deadlines
- Strong critical thinking skills and solutions-focused approach; anticipates needs and follows through with sound judgment
- Ability to focus on overarching goals while staying on point with detail-oriented tasks and initiatives

Work Environment
