Position Summary:The Director of Compliance is responsible for leading compliance, regulatory reporting, environmental attribute management, and certification functions across the Renewables Division. This senior leadership role ensures the integrity, accuracy, and audit readiness of all renewable fuel production, environmental credit generation, and trading activities while minimizing regulatory and commercial risk.
The Director of Compliance will oversee compliance programs related to Renewable Fuel Standard, Canadian Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR), Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS), 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credits, voluntary carbon markets, and sustainability certifications including ISCC and other future applicable frameworks. The role serves as the primary compliance authority for the organization and partners closely with Commercial, Operations, Engineering, Finance, Legal, Government Affairs, and external regulators.
The successful candidate will build and lead a high-performing compliance organization that supports continued growth in RNG, BioLNG, environmental commodities, and emerging decarbonization markets.
ResponsibilitiesCompliance Strategy & Leadership- Develop and execute the Renewables Division compliance strategy.
- Establish governance frameworks, internal controls, compliance policies, and standard operating procedures across all environmental products and renewable fuel operations.
- Provide strategic guidance to senior leadership on emerging regulatory and market developments.
- Lead annual compliance planning and risk assessment initiatives.
Environmental Programs & Regulatory Compliance- Ensure compliance with EPA Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), California LCFS, Oregon CFP, Canadian Clean Fuel Regulations, 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit requirements, ISCC and applicable certification programs
- Ensure compliance with existing and emerging maritime compliance frameworks such as Fuel EU, regional ETS', and IMO
- Engage with internal and external audiences to drive policy development for new markets and emerging compliance frameworks
- Oversee registrations, attest engagements, pathway applications, fuel reporting, and environmental attribute reporting activities.
- Maintain organizational readiness for regulatory reviews and third-party verification activities.
Environmental Attribute Management- Ensure accurate generation, transfer, monetization, and retirement of environmental attributes including RINs, LCFS credits, CFR credits, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), and voluntary carbon credits.
- Establish controls over registry activities and environmental asset inventories.
- Work closely with commercial and trading teams to support structured transactions and environmental commodity marketing activities.
Audit, Governance & Risk Management- Lead internal and external compliance audits.
- Develop comprehensive compliance monitoring programs.
- Maintain documentation standards sufficient to support regulatory examinations and transaction due diligence.
- Identify emerging compliance risks and implement mitigation strategies.
- Coordinate with Legal and Finance on governance and control assessments.
Team Leadership- Lead and develop the compliance organization, including managers, analysts, and technical specialists.
- Establish performance objectives, development plans, and succession strategies.
- Build organizational capability in regulatory reporting, carbon accounting, lifecycle analysis, and market compliance.
- Foster a culture of integrity, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Regulatory Affairs & Stakeholder Engagement- Serve as primary company representative with regulators, certification bodies, auditors, and industry organizations.
- Monitor regulatory developments and communicate impacts to executive leadership.
- Support Government Relations activities with technical and regulatory expertise.
- Participate in industry working groups and trade associations.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Business, Finance, Public Policy, Law, or related discipline.
- Master's degree, MBA, or JD preferred.
- 10+ years of experience in renewable fuels, environmental markets, energy compliance, regulatory affairs, or related fields.
- 5+ years leading compliance, regulatory, or environmental market teams.
- Deep understanding of EPA RFS, LCFS programs, CFR, 45Z tax credits, carbon accounting methodologies, and ISCC or comparable sustainability certification systems.
- Experience supporting environmental commodity trading and commercial transactions.
- Demonstrated success leading regulatory audits and compliance programs in highly regulated industries.
