Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Director of Community Standards and Student Life provides leadership and strategic direction for the University's student conduct process and broader community standards initiatives.

The Director oversees student conduct matters, including reviewing incidents, conducting investigations, coordinating resolution processes, developing policies and procedures, and providing education and training to the campus community. The position works closely with students, faculty, staff, campus security, and other University partners to promote student wellbeing, accountability, fairness, and a safe and supportive campus environment.

The Director also provides leadership for student support initiatives, including basic needs programming, student success resources, and campus response teams.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as the University's primary student conduct officer and promote community standards, student learning, safety, and wellbeing.
  • Lead the student conduct process, including investigating, managing, and resolving alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Conduct investigations by interviewing involved parties, reviewing documentation and other case materials, evaluating findings, and preparing investigative reports.
  • Evaluate conduct reports and determine appropriate educational sanctions and outcomes while maintaining a fair, transparent, and consistent process.
  • Supervise unit staff and oversee a community-focused, learning-centered, and procedurally sound student conduct process.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures related to the Student Code of Conduct, hearing processes, and community standards in accordance with University policy and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Maintain current knowledge of legal requirements, research, trends, and best practices related to student conduct, student behavior, due process, and sanctioning.
  • Develop and facilitate educational programs addressing student rights and responsibilities, ethical behavior, decision-making, conflict resolution, civility, community expectations, drug and alcohol education, hazing prevention, cross-cultural communication, and student organization risk management.
  • Oversee the maintenance, confidentiality, archiving, and appropriate destruction of student conduct records, including student holds and transcript notations.
  • Partner with the Provost's Office regarding academic dishonesty matters and support faculty training related to student conduct processes.
  • Serve on the Campus Assessment Response Education (CARE) Team/Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) and collaborate with campus partners regarding students requiring coordinated support or intervention.
  • Provide leadership and direction for the University's Bias Response Team (BRT).
  • Coordinate the University's Basic Needs program, including relationships with local food banks, community-based organizations, and social service agencies.
  • Oversee student basic-needs initiatives, including the Food Pantry, Clothing Closet, and related programs.
  • Collaborate with program chairs, University leadership, and campus partners to develop programming, resources, and support initiatives that promote student success.
  • Support Student Affairs assessment activities, evaluate program effectiveness, and implement improvements as appropriate.
  • Represent the Office of the Dean of Students on University committees and other institutional initiatives.
  • Collaborate with campus security and, when appropriate, municipal law enforcement regarding student conduct or community safety matters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in higher education administration, student affairs, college student personnel, law, counseling, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of full-time professional experience in a relevant higher education or student affairs setting.
  • Demonstrated experience with student conduct processes, investigations, case management, and student due process.
  • Knowledge of applicable higher education laws and regulations, including FERPA, the Jeanne Clery Act, the Higher Education Act, Title IX, Title V, Title VI, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and other relevant federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Experience maintaining confidential student information and records.
  • Demonstrated experience developing or facilitating workshops, training, or educational programming.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse populations.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Work is primarily performed in a collaborative office and campus environment with regular interaction with students, faculty, staff, and University leadership. The position may occasionally perform work independently and may have the ability to work remotely based on operational needs.

Some evening and weekend work may be required based on student needs, incidents, programs, or University events.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

This position requires the ability to perform work for extended periods at a desk or computer workstation and requires significant use of a computer and keyboard throughout the workday.

The position may require prolonged sitting or standing, as well as occasional pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, and reaching. The role requires strong attention to detail, written and verbal communication, the ability to work under deadline pressure, and the patience and tact necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

LOCATION

Hybrid - San Francisco Bay Area. This position requires regular on-campus attendance two to three days per week, with additional on-campus attendance as operational needs require.
