Job SummaryThe Director, National Underwriting is responsible for safeguarding the Company’s risk profile by ensuring that title insurance policies are issued in accordance with established underwriting standards, corporate risk appetite, and regulatory requirements. This role provides expert guidance and oversight on complex, high-risk, and precedent-setting underwriting matters across all regions of Canada, with a direct impact on the Company's underwriting practices, loss prevention strategies, and overall profitability.
As a national subject matter expert, the Director, National Underwriting supports all business lines in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new products, endorsements, and underwriting initiatives. The role works closely with Legal, Claims, Operations, Product Development, Sales, and Senior Leadership to identify emerging risks, enhance underwriting processes, and ensure consistency in underwriting decisions nationwide.
The position also serves as the lead fraud expert for the Corporate Underwriting team, providing strategic direction on fraud prevention, detection, and mitigation. This includes monitoring fraud trends, developing underwriting protocols and training programs, supporting investigations of suspected fraudulent activity, and acting as a key advisor on complex fraud-related matters. Through these efforts, the Director plays a critical role in protecting the Company from financial loss and maintaining the integrity of its title insurance operations.
HERE’S HOW YOU’LL CONTRIBUTE:
- Provide expert underwriting guidance, risk assessment, and approval support to the RS, MMS, RLS, and CS business units, ensuring risks remain within the Company's established risk appetite.
- Lead the analysis, development, and enhancement of title insurance products, endorsements, and coverage solutions, including the identification of emerging issues and implementation of corrective measures.
- Support FCT’s strategic business initiatives through the design of new coverage, underwriting solutions, and product offerings, and assist with their operational implementation.
- Serve as a key legal and underwriting resource by responding to inquiries from lawyers, clients, and internal stakeholders regarding title insurance coverage and underwriting matters.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, external legal counsel, and Claims Counsel to identify emerging risks, monitor industry trends, and develop underwriting practices that mitigate loss exposure.
- Provide underwriting expertise and support at client meetings, presentations, industry events, and other business development initiatives.
- Develop and deliver training programs and educational resources for internal and external customers.
- Foster strong relationships with customers and industry partners by providing responsive, high-quality service and practical underwriting solutions.
