  • Occasional travel within Northern California and across the U.S. for meetings and conferences.

Founded in 1967, Dignity Health - Mercy San Juan Medical Center is a 377-bed, acute care, nonprofit hospital located in Carmichael, California. Serving over 100,000 patients annually, the hospital offers a full complement of services including a Level II Trauma Center, Level III NICU, heart care, cancer care, women’s health, and neurology. Additionally, Mercy San Juan Medical Center has been recognized as an LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. It is a Comprehensive Stroke Center, the highest level of stroke care certification awarded by The Joint Commission.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

Job Duties:1. Promote a values-based organizational culture and educational programming for executives,physicians, staff, volunteers, and community, uniting people around Dignity Health’s mission, vision,values, and heritage, as well as Catholic identity, spirituality, ethics, and leadership.2. Serve on the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services (ERDs) and provideguidance to the Ethics Committee on issues involving end-of-life care, accommodations, reproductiveservices, and resource allocation3. Oversee the hospital’s Spiritual Care Department, ensuring pastoral coverage, professionalsupervision of chaplains, and integration of spiritual care within interdisciplinary teams.4. Coordinate with the local Roman Catholic Diocese, local parishes, and community organizations topromote health initiatives for the underserved and vulnerable communities and support partnershipsthat foster equality and holistic wellness.5. Support mission-related programs that promote employee well-being, engagement, and recognition,and assist leadership by providing input on mission considerations during organizational changes,policy updates, and other operational initiatives.6. Prepare regular reports on mission effectiveness and community benefit outcomes for leadershipand participate in mission integration council committees to coordinate and share practices acrossthe organization.7. Various Worksites: TRAVEL: Occasional travel within Northern California and sister sites across theUnited States to attend regional Mission Council meetings, Diocesan meetings, trainings, andconferences, typically not exceeding one trip per month.

 

Special skills requirements:1. Experience with providing spiritual care, emotional support, and pastoral advice during allinteractions with patients, families, and staff in a clinical setting, including critical care, palliative care,and traumatic care contexts.2. Ability to interpret and implement Ethical and Religious Directives (ERDs) in a clinical environment,including ethical consultation on complex moral and ethical issues and providing sacraments and/orother catholic religious services to patients.3. Experience with facilitating and programming adult education, volunteering/community healthoutreach events, policy drafting, parish service initiatives, and evaluations to enrich the spiritualsupport network for patients and staff.4. Must have completed four units of Clinical Pastoral Education from an Association for ClinicalPastoral Education (ACPE) or an accredited center.

5. Must have a Certification as Board Certified Chaplain.6. Must have a credential in healthcare ethics consultation (HEC-C or equivalent) from an accreditedorganization such as the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH).
