Full Job Description
The Director, Medical Staff Operations provides enterprise leadership and oversight of medical staff operations across the Novant Health system, supporting provider readiness, medical staff governance, credentialing, privileging, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.

This role partners with executive leadership, physician leaders, and operational stakeholders to develop, implement, and standardize processes that support high-quality patient care, accreditation readiness, practitioner compliance, and an exceptional provider experience across acute care hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and emerging markets. The Director is responsible for driving continuous improvement, ensuring regulatory and organizational compliance, supporting strategic growth initiatives, and fostering consistency, accountability, and operational effectiveness throughout the medical staff operations continuum.

On-call availability is required for this position, as necessary.

What You'll Do

  • Provides strategic leadership and oversight for Medical Staff Operations across the Novant Health system, including medical staff governance, credentialing, privileging, practitioner compliance, regulatory readiness, and operational excellence.
  • Establishes departmental goals, objectives, performance metrics, and operational strategies that support organizational priorities, provider readiness, accreditation requirements, and an exceptional provider experience.
  • Leads and develops regional Medical Staff Operations leaders and teams, ensuring consistent service delivery, standardized practices, regulatory compliance, and operational effectiveness across all facilities and markets.
  • Oversees the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of medical staff operations policies, procedures, workflows, and governance processes to ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational requirements.
  • Serves as a strategic liaison between executive leadership, physician leaders, Medical Staff leadership, and operational stakeholders to facilitate communication, collaboration, and effective decision-making.
  • Provides subject matter expertise related to Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, credentialing, privileging, professional practice evaluation, practitioner compliance, and medical staff governance.
  • Partners with facility and market Chief Clinical Officers, Vice Presidents of Clinical Affairs, physician leaders, and other stakeholders to develop and implement operational and governance strategies that support organizational goals.
  • Supports the operational planning and implementation of new hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, acquisitions, partnerships, and other strategic growth initiatives requiring Medical Staff Operations support.
  • Provides oversight and strategic direction for ongoing and focused professional practice evaluation activities, ensuring alignment with quality, patient safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitors operational performance, regulatory compliance, stakeholder satisfaction, and key performance indicators; identifies opportunities for standardization, process improvement, automation, and technology optimization.
  • Leads departmental workforce planning, succession planning, talent development, and performance management activities while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Manages departmental resources and budget responsibilities in partnership with the Vice President to ensure achievement of quality, service, productivity, and financial goals.
  • Demonstrates and promotes Novant Health's values related to diversity, inclusion, belonging, and equitable treatment of team members, providers, and patients.
  • Utilizes data-driven decision-making, change management principles, and process improvement methodologies to drive operational excellence and achieve sustainable results.

What We're Looking For

  • Education:
    • 4 Year / Bachelors Degree, required. Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Nursing, Public Health, Organizational Leadership, or related field.
    • Graduate Degree, preferred. Healthcare Administration (MHA), Business Administration (MBA), Public Health (MPH), Nursing, Organizational Leadership, or related field.
  • Experience:
    • 5 years Leadership and Management experience with responsibility for staff, operational performance, process improvement, and stakeholder engagement, required.
    • 10+ years Medical Staff services/ Credentialing, Privileging, Regulatory Compliance, Healthcare Operations, or related healthcare leadership Experience, required.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    • CPCS, CPMSM, or equivalent healthcare certification, required.
    • CPMSM or dual certification, preferred.
  • Additional Skills (preferred):
    • Multi-Hospital Health System experience supporting medical staff operations across multiple facilities, regions, or healthcare metrics.
    • Accreditation & Regulatory Experience supporting Joint Commission, DNV, CMS, NCQA, or other accreditation and regulatory requirements.
