Job description

Job Type: Director, Manufacturing Engineering| Location: San Francisco, CA| Department: Innovation | Reporting to: VP, Industrialized Delivery & Modular Construction | Work Location Type: #hybrid

The Director, Manufacturing Engineering owns the engineering practice that determines what gets built as a factory-tested module versus field-built for IREN's data center portfolio - leading the teams responsible for DfMA standards, bills of materials, virtual build validation, and modular assembly determination across all building systems. This role translates the VP's industrialized delivery strategy into an executable engineering discipline, leading the Electrical, Mechanical, Manufacturing Engineering, and Systems Engineering leads and their teams to produce fabrication-ready designs that meet IREN's cost, schedule, and quality requirements at scale.

Job requirements

  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in electrical, mechanical, or structural engineering with demonstrated expertise in DfMA, modular design, or advanced manufacturing applied to large-scale infrastructure.
  • Proven track record establishing DfMA standards and leading multidisciplinary engineering teams (electrical, mechanical, structural) through a modular or off-site delivery model.
  • Experience with BIM-to-fabrication workflows, digital twin tools, and BOM/PLM systems for module-based design.
  • Strong people-leadership experience managing engineering leads and technical teams in a high-growth, fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline required; PE license or Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience in hyperscale, colocation, or owner-operator data center development highly valued; willingness and ability to travel.
Other important requirements
  • Pre-employment screening, including background checks may be required according to company policies.
  • Must be able to reliably commute to the assigned office location on scheduled in-office days under the hybrid work arrangement.
  • IREN does not yet have an office in the Bay Area (a Santa Clara office is planned); until it opens, this role will work remotely, transitioning to hybrid on-site work once the office is established.

Job responsibilities

DfMA Standards & Governance
  • Own DfMA design standards across mechanical, electrical, structural, and architectural systems, ensuring every building system is evaluated for off-site manufacturability with a default bias toward modular, skidded, or prefabricated solutions over field-built alternatives.
  • Establish and govern module interface standards across disciplines - defining connection boundaries, tolerances, and field tie-in procedures so components from different systems integrate predictably on site.
  • Maintain and expand IREN's kit-of-parts library - the standardized set of modules, assemblies, and interfaces that can be configured and deployed across site typologies with minimal bespoke engineering.
BOM Management & Virtual Build Validation
  • Own accurate, structured bills of materials for every module and assembly as designs evolve, ensuring procurement and fabrication partners are always working from the current configuration.
  • Direct virtual build (BIM-to-fabrication) workflows and digital twin alignment to validate module designs and resolve clashes before fabrication begins, reducing rework and field surprises.
  • Drive modular assembly determination - the system-level call on which components ship as factory-tested modules (E-Houses, generator platforms, mechanical skids, cooling distribution systems, structural components) versus field-built.
Team Leadership
  • Recruit, build, and lead the Manufacturing Engineering organization, including the Electrical, Mechanical, Manufacturing Engineering, and Systems Engineering leads and their engineers, coordinators, and test engineers.
  • Set standards for design quality, documentation discipline, and fabrication-partner collaboration; mentor leads and senior engineers to build organizational depth in DfMA methodology and modular design.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Project Management and Industrial Engineering/Operational Excellence to ensure module designs, BOMs, and interface requirements are reflected in project schedules and manhour/insource-outsource models from the earliest design stages.
  • Serve as the engineering voice in interface decisions between mechanical, electrical, and structural systems, resolving cross-discipline conflicts before they reach the field.
Metrics & Performance
  • Own module-level performance metrics - FAT pass rates, module installation cycle times, field rework, and off-site build percentage - and report engineering program health to the VP.
  • Drive systematic improvement in DfMA standards project over project, incorporating lessons-learned feedback from commissioning, construction, and fabrication back into the design.
