Director, Learning, Curriculum and Program Development

Reporting to the Executive Director, Learning and Professional Practice, the Director, Learning, Curriculum and Program Development provides leadership to the organization and the Learning & Development department in the development, execution, and sustainability of BCEHS as a learning organization. The Director, guides the strategic planning, coordination, development, delivery and evaluation of strategic learning and professional growth initiatives that promote and contribute to the achievement of the BCEHS vision of being an international leader in healthcare innovation and delivery, critical members of the communities it serves and partners with and being recognized as an exceptional employer. The Director is an ambassador and advocate, promoting an organizational culture of learning, leadership, and continuous professional growth and advancing a standard of excellence in health care education that benefits employees, patients and all citizens of British Columbia. The Director works with health system partners and stakeholders to provide leadership on strategic BCEHS initiatives and contributes to the overall development and identification of BCEHS priorities, operational and strategic plans.

What you'll do:
  • Leads and manages the implementation of clinical learning and professional growth within BCEHS to achieve the vision of the organization, sets priorities and monitors progress in achieving objectives.
  • Provides visionary leadership to employees within the portfolio and throughout the organization through mentoring and fostering an atmosphere to promote and encourage employees to realize their maximum potential and growth and to improve the quality of care.
  • Develops networks and builds alliances, engages in cross-functional activities, collaborates across boundaries, and finds common ground with a wide range of stakeholders including vendors, government agencies, and other health authorities. Utilizes contacts to build and strengthen internal and external support bases.
  • Provides leadership, coordination and decisions on all matters related to learning including education needs assessments, planning, instructional design, organizational readiness, resource development, resource distribution, education delivery modes, and research and evaluation of education.
  • Oversees aspects of human resource management within designated portfolio including performance assessments, appraisals, resolving conflicts, recruiting staff as well as management of consultant contracts including assessing proposals, awarding contracts, monitoring and evaluation performance.
  • Develops and monitors an annual budget for the portfolio in collaboration with the team. Responsibilities include monitoring budget performance, planning and adjusting deliverables to meet annual targets, approving expenditures and preparing summaries for fiscal reporting. Liaises with representatives of finance in addition to the senior leadership, on budget matters.

What you bring:
  • A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Master's degree in a relevant discipline such as Education (Adult Education, Education Leadership, Education Administration), Organization Development, or a clinical discipline supported by a minimum of seven (7) years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience supplemented by progressively more senior experience in adult education instructional design, curriculum development, instruction and evaluation and clinical care in addition to successful contribution and leadership on strategic initiatives.
  • Solid experience in all aspects of education program planning and delivery including learning needs assessment, curriculum development, instructional design, teaching/facilitation, resource development, program delivery and evaluation. Ability to coach other staff on how to do the same.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of learning theory, research, application, and evaluation in a complex multidisciplinary, cross-program and multiple-agency health care and education context.
  • Ability to provide leadership and advance the practice of learning in a health care organization in accordance with that organization's strategic goals and priorities. Demonstrated ability to integrate knowledge of learning and adult education principles in health care education programs. Ability to coach other staff on how to do the same.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams in optimizing patient safety and quality of care.
  • Ability to advance strategic initiatives, project planning and implementation in an inter-professional and multi-program setting and ability to effect change.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, manage and direct complex project initiatives with diverse organizations, groups and individuals representing a wide spectrum of ideas and interests, build consensus with diverse stakeholder groups with demonstrated leadership and change management skills, lead the development and implementation of major project initiatives and manage projects with competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to understand and communicate effectively with others at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and lead staff and promote effective teamwork.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for progressive, innovative thinking.

Typical Hiring Range: $118,923 - $156,086

The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate's relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
