Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Director (Internal Communications) for University Communications and Marketing.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Leads internal communications strategy, governance, process definition, operations, and content development for university-wide audiences.
- Works across central administrative units to deliver timely and engaging content to Rutgers faculty and staff.
- Collaborates with communications leaders in various administrative units, and within University Communications and Marketing.
- Develops platforms, plans, content, and tactics to help grow the engagement of Rutgers internal audiences.
- Guides Rutgers' approach, planning, and platforms used to clearly communicate information and initiatives from the Central Administration, while also thinking about how Chancellor Lead Units, schools, and other departments can leverage the framework and technologies set up for enterprise communications.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience - Bachelor's degree or above, ideally in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, English, or a related field.
- At least 7 years of experience in internal communications, employee engagement, or corporate communications in a large complex environment.
Certifications/Licenses - A valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Hands-on experience with email platforms and intranet content management systems to deploy content and track metrics.
- Ability to work hands-on-drafting content, managing platforms, and addressing rapid-turn requests with accuracy and speed.
- Proven track record building or transforming internal comms strategies, systems, and standards at scale, with clear measurement of impact.
- Proven capability to balance strategic leadership with flawless day-to-day execution.
- Strong executive presence and coaching ability; experience advising and partnering with senior executives and C-suite leaders.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills; able to translate complex strategies into clear, concise messages and tool kits for executives and managers. Strong content judgment skills across audiences, formats, and time horizons.
- Strong understanding of change communications and employee engagement drivers.
- Experience building governance, frameworks, and processes that elevate communication quality and consistency.
- Ability to influence, align, and enable cross-functional contributors without direct reporting authority.
- High judgment, discretion, and issue management skills in a highly visible enterprise environment.
- Experience planning and running enterprise-wide forums and change communications with cross-functional partners (People, Legal, Finance, IT).
- Operational excellence: adept at standing up workflows, calendars, templates, and feedback loops that increase clarity and speed.
Preferred Qualifications - Background in implementing enterprise communication platforms or developing communication governance models for intranets, digital signage, enterprise-wide meetings, webinars, and engagement forums.
- Strong capability building, including developing tool kits, playbooks, and communication standards.
- Experience building metrics frameworks for internal communications tied to trust, engagement, and clarity.
