Role Summary

Reporting directly to the Chief Medical Officer, you will provide strategic leadership for GME operations, accreditation, compliance, financial stewardship, and program growth while serving as the central liaison between residency programs, academic departments, faculty, and affiliate partners.

What You'll Do
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for Howard University Hospital's Graduate Medical Education (GME) enterprise.
  • Direct the operations and administration of the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), including meeting planning, documentation, governance activities, and follow-up on committee actions.
  • Lead the Annual Institutional Review (AIR) process, coordinating institutional assessment, documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain institutional GME policies and governance processes in accordance with ACGME Institutional Requirements.
  • Oversee institutional accreditation activities, including monitoring accreditation action plans, tracking corrective actions, and ensuring ongoing regulatory readiness.
  • Manage institutional GME data, dashboards, and reporting to support accreditation, regulatory compliance, executive leadership, and institutional decision-making.
  • Establish and oversee institutional processes for confidential reporting, review, and resolution of resident and fellow concerns in alignment with ACGME requirements.
  • Ensure institutional compliance with ACGME accreditation standards, CMS regulations, institutional policies, and applicable federal and state requirements.
  • Provide leadership for GME operational planning, process improvement, and program growth initiatives that strengthen the institution's academic mission.
  • Lead and develop the GME administrative team while fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and service excellence.
  • Oversee the GME operating budget and support long-term financial planning and Medicare GME reimbursement activities, including DGME and IGME reporting.
  • Partner with physician leadership, residency and fellowship program leadership, academic departments, and affiliate institutions to support the success of Graduate Medical Education across the organization.
  • Ensure accurate institutional documentation, records management, and regulatory reporting supporting Graduate Medical Education operations.

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university. In lieu of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience in GME accreditation and operations will be considered.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience in GME operations.
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience as a program director.
  • Knowledge of GME programs and the workings of postgraduate medical education.
  • Knowledge of standard accounting principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in program management and creating/managing budgets and business plans.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to delegate tasks and motivate a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and oral.
  • Proven program management and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission, HIPAA, and federal and local regulatory requirements as they pertain to GME programs.

Pay & Schedule

This is a full-time, exempt position working Monday through Friday, onsite at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC. The annual salary range for this role is $157,000-$172,500. Placement within the range is based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
