About the team and the role:The Seller Experience team builds the next generation of selling experiences that power eBay's recommerce flywheel. We are a small, focused, and highly collaborative group that works in agile, multi-functional squads with Product Management, Engineering, Quality, UX Research, and Design. Together, we tackle large-scale, high-impact problems that shape how millions of people sell on eBay every day, generating billions in annual revenue.
As Director of Engineering, you will lead multiple engineering teams and managers responsible for some of the most critical, high-volume seller flows across platforms. You will drive our AI-powered seller experience strategy, ensure world-class reliability and performance, and help cultivate a culture of inclusivity, craftsmanship, and continuous learning. This is an opportunity to operate with the energy of a start-up while employing the scale, data, and resources of a global company.
What you will accomplish:- Lead multiple cross-platform engineering teams to deliver AI-powered seller experiences that improve seller outcomes, increase engagement, and drive significant revenue impact.
- Own delivery excellence for a critical portfolio of seller flows, continuously improving reliability, performance, scalability, and time-to-market through strong engineering practices.
- Build, coach, and grow a high-performing bench of engineering leaders and senior ICs, creating clear career paths and a culture of psychological safety, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
- Partner closely with Product, UX, Analytics, Architecture, and other domains to define strategy, shape roadmaps, and ship cohesive solutions that elevate the end-to-end seller journey.
- Drive pragmatic modernization and simplification of architectures and platforms, proactively addressing tech debt and introducing tools and patterns that materially improve developer productivity and customer impact.
- Champion TDD, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and effective incident management so teams can experiment safely, deploy frequently, and resolve issues quickly for sellers.
What you will bring:- 15+ years of software engineering experience, including building and operating large-scale distributed systems or high-traffic consumer products, and 5+ years leading managers and multiple engineering teams or portfolios.
- Proven success delivering complex, multi-functional initiatives in partnership with Product, Design/UX, and business collaborators, with strong communication skills and experience influencing senior leadership.
- Technical depth across services, data, and client technologies (web and/or native), with the ability to go deep in architecture and code reviews and to effectively challenge and support senior engineers.
- Demonstrated track record of driving engineering excellence, including TDD or strong automated testing practices, CI/CD pipelines, robust observability, and a focus on reliability and performance.
- Experience leading teams in e-commerce, marketplaces, or other high-scale consumer Internet domains; seller-facing or recommerce experiences and AI/ML-driven products are a strong plus.
- Inclusive, generative leadership style: you optimize for outcomes over outputs, use data and experimentation to guide decisions, embrace agentic AI as a force multiplier with clear guardrails, and thrive in globally distributed, collaborative environments.
