The Opportunity

As a Data Governance & Compliance Director, you will provide strategic leadership for enterprise data governance initiatives, driving accountability for critical data assets and establishing sustainable practices for data ownership, stewardship, quality, lineage, and governance. You will influence stakeholders across the association, translate complex data and regulatory requirements into actionable strategies, and drive continuous improvement in data governance maturity. You will help ensure that data management practices support regulatory obligations, risk management, and the associations broader business and strategic objectives.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Colorado Springs, CO, or Charlotte, NC. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you'll do:
  • Lead strategic direction across one or more data domains in information governance, data management, data quality, information architecture and information asset management capabilities working within Agile community and all leadership levels in prioritizing and funding capabilities delivery across the Association and various data domains.
  • Direct and collaborates with business and IT partners on utilizing information governance, data quality, information architecture and information asset management capabilities in support of achieving business operations and strategic goals and objectives.
  • Advise all levels of leadership on institutionalizing and maturing information governance, data management, data quality, information architecture and information asset management capabilities to include providing advice on mitigating risk and satisfying and addressing risk and regulatory requirements related to information governance and management.
  • Partner with business, risk, compliance, architecture, and IT teams to drive effectiveness and value of information governance, data management, data quality, information architecture and information asset management processes to the business.
  • Ensure team understands how the information management activities they are responsible for align with information governance, data management, data quality, information architecture, technical solutions, and information asset management activities performed by other teams.
  • Direct team in work assignments, problem resolution, risk mitigation, and producing quality work.
  • Provide the leadership, motivation, oversight and environment necessary for building high performing teams that collaborate with Association stakeholders in defining information governance, data quality, information architecture and information asset management capabilities that delivers business value, outcomes and solves business challenges.
  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.


What you have:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Data and Analytics, Information Technology, Business, Finance, Risk, Audit or a related field of study; OR 4 years of related experience in information governance, information management, information technology or risk management (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 8+ years of experience in Information or Data related practices to include: information governance, data management, information management, information architecture, information technology, risk, audit, analysis and reporting; OR Advanced degree in Information Architecture, Information Management, Information Studies, Risk, Audit, Information Technology or a related technical field and 6+ years' experience in Information or Data related practices as noted above.
  • 3+ years of direct team lead or management experience.
  • Expert knowledge of industry information/data governance best practices, information technology best practices and architecture roadmaps and capabilities maps.
  • Experience leading teams, peers and leadership levels across complex problem-solving activities, domains, or regulatory drivers at an Association or data domain levels.
  • Experience leading developing, or operationalizing data management and/or data governance policies, standards, processes, procedures & technologies.
  • Experience leading agile delivery activities across people, process, and technology.
  • Experience leading enterprise data governance and data management strategies within a complex organization.
  • Experience with data privacy, data classification, sensitive data management, or privacy-by-design practices.
  • Strong knowledge of data management principles and practices aligned with DAMA-DMBOK knowledge areas.
  • Experience establishing and implementing data governance frameworks, policies, standards, practices, and operating models.
  • Strong experience with data quality management, including data quality standards, controls, monitoring, issue identification, and remediation.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining data lineage and data traceability for critical data assets.
  • Experience with regulatory reporting and requirement supporting regulatory obligations in a highly regulated environment.


What sets you apart:
  • Financial services, insurance, banking, or other highly regulated industry experience.
  • CDMP (Certified Data Management Professional) certification strongly preferred.
  • Other relevant certifications such as CIMP, IGP, DCAM, or equivalent data management/information governance certifications preferred.
  • US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner.


Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $143,320 - $273,930.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
