Job Description Role Summary The Director, Business Solutions will lead a global team of solution consultants responsible for delivering strategic, customer-centric recommendations to Large Market, Global Commercial Services, and International Card Services (ICS) clients. This leader will partner closely with Sales, Account Development, Product, and Client Management teams to support complex commercial opportunities and help customers realize the value of American Express payment solutions. The role is responsible for defining and executing the Business Solutions vision, driving team performance, and enhancing the organization's consultative capabilities. Working alongside a peer Director, this leader will establish shared goals, success metrics, and operating disciplines while championing the voice of the customer across the enterprise. This position is open to candidates located anywhere within the United States. The successful candidate must be able to regularly support Pacific Time Zone business hours.
Responsibilities- Lead and develop a high-performing global team of Business Solutions professionals focused on delivering strategic consultation and customer-centric recommendations for Large Market, Global, and ICS clients.
- Establish and execute the vision, operating model, and performance framework for the Business Solutions organization in partnership with peer leadership.
- Support complex sales pursuits by developing account strategies, business cases, value propositions, commercial recommendations, and executive-level client presentations.
- Partner with Sales, Account Development, Product, Client Management, and Onboarding teams to drive client acquisition, expansion, and retention opportunities.
- Build specialized team capabilities across areas such as ERP integration, AP automation, payment optimization, and industry-specific solution positioning.
- Serve as a champion for the customer perspective, influencing product strategy, solution design, and go-to-market initiatives across Global Commercial Services.
- Leverage market trends, competitive intelligence, and industry insights to strengthen American Express' differentiation and value proposition.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the client onboarding and solutioning experience using client feedback, performance data, and business insights.
- Monitor pipeline health, resource prioritization, and team capacity to ensure effective support of strategic opportunities.
- Develop and coach talent while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and customer-centricity.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications - 10+ years of experience in commercial payments, client management, sales, business development, solution consulting, treasury services, financial technology, or related fields.
- Proven experience leading and developing high-performing teams in a client-facing, consultative environment.
- Strong executive presence with demonstrated ability to influence and engage senior client stakeholders, including C-suite executives.
- Experience supporting complex enterprise sales cycles and developing strategic business solutions for large organizations.
- Exceptional communication, presentation, and relationship management skills.
- Ability to operate effectively in complex, ambiguous environments and drive alignment across diverse stakeholder groups.
- Experience leading cross-functional initiatives and influencing outcomes without direct authority.
- Demonstrated success managing multiple priorities while driving measurable business results.
Preferred Qualifications - Deep knowledge of the commercial payments ecosystem, including card programs, AP automation, virtual payments, treasury solutions, and expense management platforms.
- Experience with travel and expense (T&E) solutions and related technologies.
- Understanding of ERP platforms and finance transformation initiatives.
- Experience supporting global clients and multi-market commercial opportunities.
- Familiarity with competitive commercial payments and fintech landscapes.
- MBA or advanced business degree preferred.
Work Arrangement: This role may be filled as either virtual or hybrid, depending on the selected candidate's location and business needs. Candidates who live within commuting distance of a company office may be designated as hybrid and generally will be expected to work from the office three days per week. Candidates who do not live within commuting distance of a company office may be eligible for a virtual work arrangement, subject to company policy, business needs, and applicable law. Final work arrangement will be confirmed during the hiring process.
