Job Summary:

The Director of Business Development leads organizational efforts to drive strategic growth through referral development, provider relationships, physician recruitment, and identification of market opportunities. The Director provides leadership for physician recruitment and liaison activities, develops data-driven referral growth strategies, and collaborates with organizational leaders to support provider recruitment, service expansion, and network development. Success in this role is demonstrated through increased organizational volume, strong provider and referral relationships, successful recruitment initiatives, and execution of growth strategies aligned with Ephraim McDowell Health priorities.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:
  1. Exhibit the F.I.R.S.T. values at all times (Friendliness, Innovation, Respect, Service, Trust).
  2. Identify service gaps, referral opportunities, unmet needs, and opportunities for growth within the organization's service area.
  3. Develop and execute data-driven referral growth strategies aligned with Ephraim McDowell Health priorities.
  4. Build and maintain strong relationships with referring providers, hospital leadership, administrative leaders, medical staff, and other strategic partners.
  5. Develop strategies to strengthen provider engagement and increase referrals to Ephraim McDowell Health services.
  6. Analyze referral, utilization, appointment volume, and market data to identify trends and opportunities for organizational growth.
  7. Track and report referral activity, growth opportunities, new service line opportunities, and other business development performance measures.
  8. Represent Ephraim McDowell Health in leadership meetings, community forums, provider meetings, and partner engagement activities.
  9. Maintain accurate tracking and reporting of referral, recruitment, and business development activity using designated systems.
  10. Provide regular status updates, performance reporting, and recommendations to organizational leadership.
  11. Lead and oversee physician recruitment activities in collaboration with physician relations, recruitment, and organizational leadership.
  12. Support physician and provider onboarding and practice development activities.
  13. Collaborate with operational and clinical leaders to identify barriers to growth and develop appropriate solutions.
  14. Support the development and implementation of strategic initiatives related to provider recruitment, market growth, service expansion, and network development.
  15. Provide leadership and direction to assigned business development, recruitment, and liaison functions.
  16. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

  • Remain in a stationary position for extended periods while performing computer, telephone, and administrative work.
  • Move throughout hospital, clinic, office, and community locations as necessary to perform essential job functions.
  • Perform tasks requiring the use of computers, telephones, presentation equipment, and other standard office equipment.
  • Communicate and exchange information in person, by telephone, electronically, and during presentations or meetings.
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull light materials associated with normal office and business activities.
  • Travel between Ephraim McDowell Health locations and external partner or community locations as required.


Working Conditions and Environmental Hazards:

Work is primarily performed in professional office, hospital, clinic, and community settings. The position requires regular interaction with internal and external stakeholders and may require travel throughout the Ephraim McDowell Health service area. The Director may occasionally work outside normal business hours to support recruitment activities, meetings, community events, or other organizational needs.

Working Relationships:

Maintains frequent interaction with senior leadership, physicians, advanced practice providers, clinical and operational leaders, department directors, associates, referring providers, hospital representatives, community partners, vendors, and other external stakeholders. The position requires the ability to develop and maintain effective professional relationships and represent Ephraim McDowell Health appropriately with both internal and external audiences.

Equipment Used or Special Skills Required:

Uses standard office equipment and technology including computers, telephones, presentation equipment, Google applications, data reporting tools, recruitment systems, and other organizational software.

Requires strong interpersonal, relationship-building, communication, presentation, organizational, analytical, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Must be able to analyze data, identify growth opportunities, manage multiple priorities, communicate effectively with executive and physician audiences, and exercise appropriate judgment and discretion.

Required: Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in business development, healthcare operations, physician relations, provider recruitment, sales, marketing, or a related field.

Preferred: Leadership experience within a healthcare organization with demonstrated experience in physician recruitment, provider relations, referral development, and strategic growth initiatives.
