Description
The Solicitor General serves as the State's principal advocate on high-impact matters, including cases at the U.S. Supreme Court, the defense of state statutes, and other litigation of statewide importance. The Deputy Solicitor General will assist the Solicitor General in all capacities. Exceptional written and oral advocacy skills are required. The Deputy Solicitor General regularly presents oral argument to federal and state courts, prepares briefs in high-profile matters, and works directly with senior officials.

Examples of Duties

  • Representing the State in significant litigation at all levels of state and federal court, including the U.S. Supreme Court
  • Delivering oral arguments at the Seventh Circuit, Indiana Supreme Court, and Indiana Court of Appeals
  • Authoring merits and amicus briefs that address issues of statewide and national importance, including multi-state amicus briefs
  • Managing appeals and trial-level cases
  • Working directly with the Attorney General, the Solicitor General, and the Attorney General's senior cabinet to analyze and resolve sensitive constitutional, political, legislative, and legal policy questions.

Typical Skills and Qualifications

  • Indiana bar license (or the ability to qualify for the Indiana bar)
  • Four to seven years of related experience, including appellate experience
  • Excellent written and oral advocacy skills
  • Federal appellate clerkship preferred
